Also really excited hearing Herbert say he wants to be more like Josh Allen and use his feet. I think we forget how good at Oregon he was using his feet. He was a runner dual threat. He basically won a rose bowl with his feet. When Roman got here I wanted him to use those Colin Kaepernick sets Lamar Jackson sets. Justin is still athletic as those guys and can move around just like those guys.

signature Harbaugh win…. methodically stacks points, Minter & Co have other team on lockdown…. think we might see a coupla few more of these before the season is over, and….
think it’s apparent that @least a coupla few of our wiz kid pass catchers will need some time…. hence bringing Keenan in.ED Matayo Uiagalelei, CB Domani Jackson, OG Earnest Greene III, DT Dontay Corleone, OC Iapani Laloulu, WR J Michael Sturdivant, LB Eric Gentry

Feel free to use different terminology, if you think it adds clarity or makes for a better reading experience. I have no attachment to anybody else thinking of Lance as a reclamation project, or not. Call him something different. It doesn't matter to me.
The only thing I'm saying is similar between Smith and Lance is that BOTH were in the same spot after three NFL seasons. Smith-- now entering his 12th season-- is evidence that it's possible for an inadequate QB to develop into a respectable starter, over a period of years. It took Smith 7 years to get to that point.
We don't know whether or not Lance will get there, or how long it will take him to get there, if he does. I was intimating my original post that Smith would be in a position to advise Lance about what to do when you're three years in, and nothing has gone right.“Less is more? NO NO NO - MORE is MORE!”

Without those 3rd down scramble gut punches to tiring defenses, Mahomes/Allen would be very Herbert-like.
Herbert needs to be able to choose his spots .... which sometimes he seems incapable of doing.
Perhaps its constantly learning a new offense.Last edited by powderblueboy; 08-04-2025, 07:06 AM.

The difference I see is more about the hits.
Lamar Jackson and Mahomes both have a knack for avoiding hits altogether. I keep seeing Sunday shows with pundits complaining about how often Jackson runs, but then on the screen they show all these 10, 20 and 30 yard runs, where he just steps out of bounds or slides. Mahomes has been like that a lot too, although maybe not so much lately.
Allen has had a pretty good OL, so he takes fewer in the pocket. He could be a little better at not taking so many hits. But a lot of the hits he takes are when he runs, and I would argue there is a big difference between being a defenseless player
Our OL has had stretches when they can keep Herbert from getting sacked, but it seems like even when he is getting rid of the ball, he is still taking a lot of hits. As long as they do it sparingly, I think Herbert will be OK running on designed runs and scrambles.

At 33, Rich Gannon signed with the Raiders and went to 4 consecutive pro bowls. 3 consecutive playoff appearances and in 2002 was the NFL MVP at 37!
He was a nobody backup that sucked up until 33.
I have to chuckle at the forum ball watchers that say Trey Lance is done at 25 because he wasn’t an elite QB in the 12 NFL games he’s played.
BTW, Geno is 34. He’s in his prime according to Rich Gannon.

However, Ohrnberger blamed Herbert for his own inability to stay healthy .... taking the sack and giving up on a play at times is what he recommended for Herbert.

That luxury of Hamptons really gonna help Herbert a lot. Teams won’t be as aggressive on him. And we’ll be able to maul teams and get this clock down. And just work the clock. And keep running with them. This offensive line between Alt and Slater will be bullpying teams. And Bectam. Those 4th quarters will be winning.!!!!!!
