    JK Scott

Scott gets a lot of hate here at times. I am not sure why. Every punter has a shank now and then. Scott punts the way Ficken tells him to, sacrificing distance for height and hang. They showed how his punts descend on TV last night and they spin like a helicopter blade. I had no idea. That has to be hard to catch. And speaking of catching, how many conversions and FG and non-blocked punts does Lavato owe him?

    Respect. Appreciation. JK Scott

true he secured a LOT of errant hikes. that helicopter punt had a WEIRD downward trajectory....like it was going back TOWARDS the kicking team. I keep hearing the announcers marvel at his hang time. long punts are generally not great because you can outkick your coverage and big returns can be deflating.

JK is one of the better punters in the league. Long time fans are spoiled with having Bennett and Scifres as all-pro punters. Yeah, I wish that he were just a little more consistent, but other than the opening punt shank, the gunners were right there forcing the fair catches. I do think that they should have picked up Araiza when he was available, but Ficken is comfortable with Scott, and that's all that matters.

Thank you Mr. Heat for bringing up this topic, I feel the same. JK gets way too much hate from Chargers fans relative to his play. He's not perfect, but he makes his share of good plays where he pins the other team deep or gets the hang time ST needs or he forces a turnover like last night with his helicopter punts. Some fans just have to find somebody to hate on the team. Fickens has also recently been the target of some hate by fans here, totally unjustified.

RE the helicopter punt, I think punt was a product of the situation, the type of punt you try to do with a shorter punt not when you need to boom it. I don't know for sure, I don't know enough about it really talk about it decisively. There is a YouTuber called Isaac Punts who posts short vids usually about the kick aspect of the NFL that are really interesting. I expect he will make a vid about JK's turnover punt, I'll post it here if I see it.

Scott gets heat from fans because he seems to have his shanks at the worst possible time. The Steelers first fg was literally given to them by that horrible punt. But he really had some great punts after that.

JK is #16 in net avg this year. He's average. And he does seem to pucker and choke based on the game situation importance. He's solid on PK holds, he saved a half-dozen FGs at least.

I am more concerned with our seeming competitive disadvantage in covering KOs and returning KOs. That has nothing to do with him.

This! I also blame part of the Steelers FG on the kickoff from Dicker that gave them the ball at the 40. Dicker has a 50 x 20 yard area to kick a ball - kick in the big rectangle!

But after the poor first punt, JK Scott had a heckuva game

JK’s best punts come when he’s past the 40 yard line. His kicks down toward his own goal line is where he struggled kicking shanks and 49 yarders. His kicks past the 40 yard line is where he lands them inside the 10. Other kickers get 55 and 60 yarders from their own 10.

that muffed punt on replay you could clearly see the ball moving around as it descends, truly a nightmare to catch

They didn’t score on that KO shank out of bounds. I guess you’re arguing he contributed to the field position? hypothetically, I’ll accept as even with our good first drive defense their punt put us deep near the goal line. But literally - i can only assign points responsibility to the drive just before the points, which was JK who shanked a 34 yarder to our own 46. Otherwise it’s an endless what-about for every play earlier in the entire game.

but that was a shit KO to open the game by dicker, no doubt. I was muttering “well FFS” the instant it went off his foot - camera angle was kind enough to show us how bad it was. It wasnt even close to staying in bounds - it went out north of the 10 yard line.

JK had a net 253 yards on 6 punts (after returns) for 42.x avg. that’s ok, almost maybe “good”. the ST blocking for him was shit too, PIT almost blocked a couple of them.

I’ve noticed that near end of games, if we have a lead, Jim tells Dicker to just kick it out of the end zone. He doesn’t trust Fickens Follies to not give up a big return either, he’d rather just concede the 35yl.

Yeah basically this. He just has shanks at the worst moments. For what he is since we got him in 2022, he’s been okay. No one will ever confuse him with Bennett or Scifres.

This is not a legit stat to evaluate punters. Not all punts are for max yards, half the time the objective of a punt is to down the ball inside the 10, on those punts the goal is not to kick the ball too far. Also net average includes the return, which the punter has no control over.
