With Gadsen being the prototype receiver, flex TE type, who has shown he runs like a WR, Kolar is not going to be catching 60-80 passes and being a starting TE. That is Gadsen's job.

But for those of us who are old enough, I think he is a better, more athletic inline TE who can be on the field, run some option routes and catch some passes. He is also good enough to scheme him open. Screens ... When Cook and Parham were The TE in the early Lombardi O ... you line up with a wing to the left, boot Herbert back to the right, and then ask the TE to come back across the formation, making the LB run with the TE. You can even play with the layering, with Kolar and Gadsen at different depths. Both are good after the catch and can get some yards and even break some tackles in the secondary.

You cannot build an offense off that stuff, but it fits with the running game ... keeps backside defenders staying at home and keeps them from running Hampton down from behind when he tries to cutback on inside zone and duo.

His highlights show me good hands, really good blocking, and man does he have a penchant for falling down on seam routes as soon as he catches the ball. Some of them were due to qb play, but it really sticks out.

Totally off topic, but watching his highlights, Lamar has to wait and actually see the receiver break open, even at this stage in his career. He can not anticipate throws.

Yeah he's not a YAC guy if there's a defender in the vicinity. Guy goes down easier than a $10 whore

what jumped out to me was he ran 40 of 4.67 ... noting it was a pro day, not combine, number, thats pretty darn good for a dude that big.

That's what Hunter Henry was clocked at during his Arkansas pro day.

I think that is about what Herbert’s 40 was?

                  Yes - Herbert ran a 4.68.

Jackson does some of that. I think it looks worse due to how Kolar is used. If you were watching other highlights, it wouldn't be as bad.

As far as Kolar goes, he just was stuck at TE3 on a team that had two really good TE with Andrews and Likely. He made the most of the few opportunities he got. Made plays as a blocker and he made them as a receiver.

He is never going to be one of those really elite pass catching TE who is like an extra WR. That isn't his skill set. But he is a pretty good TE who can do enough as a receiver to be a solid starter. Option routes, seams, drags and bootlegs and really good on checkdowns. I like the fact that he has the speed to make plays if you can scheme him open, and McDaniel O can scheme TE open. Add to it that Kolar can attack defenses as a blocker inside or out, he really can open up the O.

The big thing is that I think Kolar helps open up the O and makes OG a bigger weapon. We need someone to be a traditional Y-TE so that we can have OG can be our Winslow/Gates/Kelce type of guy. OG can be a regular inline TE, or a mismatch guy who lines up anywhere. He blocks OK, he can be size mismatch or an athletic mismatch. Kolar can be the traditional TE (Eric Sievers) type. OG can create the big mismatches, and Kolar can exploit defenses that over correct. He can even be a solid (but not spectacular) starting TE if OG is hurt.

                          He fills an important need.

I wonder who the 3rd TE will be. Not thinking Fisk and not sure if they have enough draft picks for a TE with the other needs. Maybe if not draft pick they look at Jonnu after the draft.
