I’m for whatever makes the most sense in the given situation…another Hortiz draft in 2027 and this roster will be so stacked that the draft strategy should transition to a more rigid BPA approach but with an eye toward replacing aging players with expensive contracts…the thing about this roster that TT left us with, is that outside of a handful of players there just wasn’t much, no players in development that were worth a damn, no depth to speak of and with all that being true somehow TT fucked The cap sideways too…

I haven’t liked every single move that Hortiz has made but I also realize that he’s a team player and works jointly with his coach and other people in the front office…he’s not a my way (all the time) or the highway kind of guy…

        I think it will be:

        Slater-Awosika-Biadasz-Srrange -Alt

Awosika is scheme fit and player on the rise I will keep an eye on him during camp.

          ….

The consensus board had those players going in the late 3rd early 4rth round but the consensus board failed to adjust for demand and lack of plug and play guys at the position. So are we better off for having a center that may or may not start at guard in 2026 but we know can play center now if Biadasz goes down with injury? OR like the Ravens, would we be better off not having Slaughter and drafting a player at #63 that was ranked higher on the consensus board?

JoeHo the pirate brilliantly navigated the murky waters of ‘Consensus’, churning 5 picks into 8 solid selections. And speaking of consensus, it seems there are enough so called “draft experts” these days to start a new continent. I’d rather trust the former director of scouting who has unequivocally proven his talent evaluation chops thru his first two years. Yes, we were all surprised with the Slaughter selection. But if Joe was impressed enough to put his blue star label on him, who am I to question it. Upon closer inspection, it really does start to become clear - the kid literally put up the best production in the country as a center (allowed just 4 f#cking pressures vs the SEC!), is sharp as a tack, has a surprisingly decent anchor (see his Senior Bowl rep vs fellow Gator Caleb Banks), and is a very good athlete. There will undoubtedly be an adjustment period while he learns, but there’s no reason to believe he can’t eventually become a very good OG in McD’s system. He literally has all the requisite tools.

Slaughter was literally the second to last pick in the 2nd round, he was only two picks away from being a 3rd round pick...The trade down to get Jake netted us Sega Genesis Smith and Logan "the wolverine" Taylor...I don't know, but I think this is already looking really really good for us...I think Taylor could end up starting at LG, him and Slaughter could be the future LG/C combo for years to come...

Logan Taylor is solid. I think he will make the team as a depth lineman with all that versatility

I am still not totally sure about Jake Slaughter. I really like him as center of the future, and now having great center depth...just not sure about him as our starting LG. He has a lot to learn with no experience there and isnt real big and strong for a guard at just 300 lbs

Agree with ya. IMO, no reason to think that Penning will outperform Cole Strange.

How about Awosika and Slaughter in a battle for LG
                  Penning and Strange for RG
Slaughter has already a backup spot at C at least
Remember the last time we have a situation as good at OL ?

I'm not trying to suggest that Jake Slaughter's transition from Center to Guard will be an absolute breeze. But on the other hand, as position switches in the NFL go, this one makes use of a practically identical skill set. There are some technique things Slaughter will have to get accustomed to, but IMO he'll be able to do those things with the skill set he already possesses.

It's not like he's being converted to TE, and he has to develop NFL quality hands and learn routes.

I didn't come up with this but it deserves repeating, Jake Slaughter is our Cam Jurgens, what Jurgens was to Kelce those last couple of seasons, that's what Slaughter is to us, premium luxury depth at a key position in the O-line until he takes over for Biadasz in 2028...
