Very sad news. I got to speak with him a handful of times. He was a total wiseguy.

This really sucks, RIP, it seems like it wasn't that long ago that he was still working on the radio, Scott and BR, used to listen to them regularly...I had no idea he'd been ill, nothing had been released in regards to that...

My condolences to his beautiful wife...I like probably many young males growing up in San Diego at that time had a massive celebrity crush on Kimberly Hunt when I was in HS and I was over the moon when one of my Charger heroes married her...When I was in College I worked part time at the Price Club on Morena Blvd and they used to come in to do their shopping about once a week...Billy Ray sometimes brought his dad Billy Ray Sr. they would always take time to say hi to people, they seemed like really nice folks...

Brain health is a big deal, everyone.
                    Take care of yourselves.
My good friend died of dementia in January, but he was 82 years old.
                    RIP BRSJ.

Wow, just reading this. He was my age. He was a cool dude, always comfortable just being who he was and it always shined through. Good player. condolences and prayers

Man - how long ago was Price club = Price club? The OG big store. I remember we called it the Century Club cuz you’d always spend $100 no matter what you had thought you went for. man, if i could get out of Costco doors only spending $100 now, I’d go buy a lottery ticket!

Shocked to see this sad title as he was only 64 YO. Although I still live in San Diego's north county, I had not been following much of what happens inside SD's sport world and its community of fans (Padres, Aztecs, etc). Having cut the proverbial cable cord many years ago, had made me even less aware of the local new, case in point, I didn't even know that Billy Ray was suffering from dementia! I found this excerpt released by his family online:

"It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Billy Ray Smith Jr., who passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Billy Ray faced his long journey with dementia caused by CTE with unmatched bravery, dignity, and strength."

I only remember BRS as the sportscaster on ABC 10 channel locally many years ago and also as a part of that sports talk radio station which also went out of business years ago, his time as a Chargers player for was at least a half dozen years before I settled down in San Diego. Condolences to his family.
