    Browns nab ex-Charger Fozzy Whittaker

Any hope the Chargers had of bringing back Fozzy Whittaker ended Monday.

San Diego waived the running back/kick returner on Saturday, making room to sign tackle Nick Becton from the practice squad. He did not clear waivers, as the Browns were awarded a claim.

Running back Danny Woodhead could remain the Chargers’ kick returner at least for another week. He had an 18-yard return Sunday; the other three were touchbacks.

Former Chargers kick returner Richard Goodman is a free agent. The wide receiver is an option if the team wants to devote a roster spot for a specialist, but given the injury state of the roster, that may not be feasible for now.

Whittaker averaged 26 yards on six returns.

The Chargers needed Becton in order to dress seven offensive linemen Sunday against the Cowboys. Three starters were inactive with injuries.

“That’s the bad part of the business,” McCoy said. “There were only so many spots we had, so unfortunately, we had to let Fozzy go. Danny did a nice job in there, stepping in. He’s a true professional.”

    Nuts 'n' Bolts

    • Inside linebacker Manti Te’o played 14 defensive snaps in his NFL debut Sunday, working strictly in the base defense. “He wanted to play more, but they only had so many snaps in base,” McCoy said. “He’ll work his way into other packages, I’m sure, as time goes on.”

    • Woodhead called Philip Rivers “obviously an elite quarterback.” Rivers is 105-for-142 for 1,190 yards and 11 touchdowns with two picks.

God damn it. Even my favorite player, Woodhead, is using that word - elite. How did such a sissy word make it into the NFL?

Elite people sit in box seats at synchronized-swimming events and sip on mimosas.

Philip Rivers is not obviously elite. Philip Rivers is obviously a bad-ass daddy mac who will make the Raiders bow down and accept splooge to all their faces.
