    Failure to re-tool the D

At one time around 2008/2009 the D was perrty talented we had Pro Bowl players, but we have failed to adequetly replace players look at what once was and what we transition to now. . NT as many posted hasn't been the same since Williams, but Garay was a good pick up who gave us a few good years and even made the Pro Bowl. The current DEs I thought would be doing better. ILB went through a lot of changes hard to grade were we stand with the current ILB do to injuries and the same with OLBs. Corners aren't what they use to be, then again neither is the pass rush.We never have paired up another quality safety with Weddle

NT Jamall William……….Garay………….. Cam Thomas drop off

DE Castillio\Cesaire………..Cesaire\Liuget…………. Liuget\Reyes but have not played well this year

    ILB Cooper\Burnett……Burnnet\Sieler……….Spikes\Butler……… ..Butler\Teo

    OLB Merriman\Phillips……..Phillips\Barnes\Applewhite……… Phillips\LaBoy….Ingram\Johnson\Bird\etc......

    CB Jammer\Cromartie……..Jammer\Cason…………Cox\Wright

    S Weddle\Oliver……..Weddle\Gregory…….. Weddle\Corey Lynch…………Weddle\Gilchrist

Draft picks like Anthony Waters (3rd round), Larry English (1st), Jacob Hester (gave up a 2nd rounder), Jonas Mouton (2nd), and even Cason (1st) will get your defense to where it is now. Let's hope that Brandon Taylor can heal up asap and fill the strong safety void then Gilchrist (another 2nd rounder) can maybe redeem himself back at the CB position. Hopefully Kwame Geathers can step up his game at NT, he looked good in the preseason and is an upcoming rookie. Also Steve Williams can hopefully come back and break out his game at slot CB next year.

Yeah those picks were killer especially the Mouton pick is totally crazy it is possible he gets cut and ends his career with the Chargers 3 games played 1 tackle!!!!! Ouch 2nd round junk!

This is why a rebuild is necessary.

Throw in Gaithers/Meachem on top of it and it's a multi year rebuild.

Hard to build or keep a good team when you miss on your first rounders. English was a big miss.

This draft should prove interesting. Lots of oppertunity to make an impact on the roster.

In any draft a team is lucky to find 3-4 starters

Like that year? Or are we talking 3-4 players who overtime all become starters?

                      Starters. Not rookie starters

Context needed. English wasn't supposed to be an immediate starter- he was a hedge for the future. He was 1 of those tweener guys that many 3-4 teams go after and take a couple years to convert to pass rush OLB. We already had (IIRC) MErriman, Phillips, Jyles Tucker and Marques Harris for rotation and AJ had a knack for picking up guys like Barnes as needed and getting some mileage out of them. They also kept trying to develop guys like Applewhite. Injuries more than anything else killed our OLB corps over the years.
