Week 12 Charger Power Rankings and Ratings

    Summary:

    ranks2017.jpg

Sagarin ratings posted late, currently 15th, best for the season.

Not surprisingly, the Chargers jumped to their best rankings of the season after blowing out Buffalo. Most comments are saying that they are in the best position of all the AFC 4-6 teams to make the playoffs.

Initial Draft position (11) is based on a projected 7-9 record with a 48% SOS (lowest of the group).

    Blurbs follow.

Look, the Chargers are closing in on the AFC's sixth seed. I'd argue they have a great chance at earning it.

The L.A. defense is rolling right now, and it's buying into a Gus Bradley scheme that fits the personnel. Philip Rivers is still a quality quarterback. The Chargers can run the ball with Melvin Gordon, and they have the league's best pass-rushing duo in Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa.

That pass rush and the entire defense put on a show against the Bills.

The Chargers can be dangerous down the stretch, and I'd expect them to be in the postseason chase until the final week.

It's crazy to think that if the Chargers didn't have kicking woes, or if they could simply run out the clock at Jacksonville, they could be 7-3 right now, with their only losses being to New England, Philadelphia and Kansas City. Instead, they're 4-6. I'd proclaim that the Chargers could have a chance to catch the suddenly struggling Chiefs, but I can't help but think that they'll continue to find new and creative ways to lose.

The Chargers, the NFL's perennial hard-luck-red-headed-step-child-picked-last-in-kickball team, received a few gifts against Buffalo on Sunday. Actually, five of them, to be precise. Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley must have been shocked the Bills decided to start rookie quarterback Nathan Peterman. (Almost as shocked as the rest of us.) After five interceptions in the first half by Peterman, the Bolts were cruising to a 37-7 halftime lead. There was drama in the game, though: When do we sit Phil? Third quarter? Early fourth? Now? The Chargers are still in the hunt, kids.

They are 4-6 and have a tough road game Thursday at Dallas to face the Cowboys. They still have a chance to win the AFC West.

Adam Sites, SB Nation Hope rankings 15 (LW 25)

The Chargers have a tendency to win or lose by painfully close margins. Sunday was a different story. With five first-half interceptions of Nathan Peterman, the Chargers blew out the Bills, 54-24, to improve to 4-6.

But what's especially important for the Chargers is that the AFC Wild Card race is a bumbling mess. The Ravens and Bills are tied at 5-5, and the Chargers are just behind them. Get more wins than losses down the stretch, and Los Angeles might actually bounce back from an 0-4 start to grab a playoff spot.

Reason to be thankful: The only team left on the schedule above .500 is the Kansas City Chiefs, and that team looks like a shell of the one that started 5-0.

      Mike Florio, PFT/NBC 15 (LW 19)

In the 25th anniversary of the only NFL team that made it to the playoffs after starting 0-4, this one could end up doing the same thing.

Vinnie Iyer, Sporting News 19 (LW 23)

The Chargers, if it weren't for some bad finishes in close games, would be in the driver's seat for an AFC wild card and be very much alive in the West race. Anthony Lynn has now found his team's run-heavy identity to better complement a pass defense that gets after it on every level. Don't sleep on a big LA run before it's all done.

This week: at Cowboys, a long Thanksgiving trip

      Matt Verderame, Fansided.com 15 (LW 19)

The Chargers are an average team, but that might be enough to win the AFC West.

The only team left on their schedule with a winning record is a reeling Kansas City squad. Bolts very much alive in AFC playoff chase.

        ESPN 16 (LW 19)

Methodology: These rankings are based on which teams voters think would win head-to-head matchups. Higher-ranked teams would be favored against lower-ranked teams. Coming off a win doesn't guarantee a jump, and a loss doesn't guarantee a fall.

Toss-up: The Chargers have won four of their past six games following an 0-4 start. Five of their losses have been by eight or fewer points. Most Chargers games are toss-ups, so it's no surprise their season has been one too.
        ---

        MMQB 15 (LW 18)

Four of their six losses came by three or fewer points (and three of them involved late-game mishaps that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory). So it was a much better idea when the Chargers decided to beat the Bills by 30 on Sunday. In the AFC, they are still very much in the playoff hunt.

        Reddit 17 (LW 21)

Now that was more like it. If the defense, wants to point to the kind of game they need to have every week, this is pretty much it. 6 turnovers with 31 points scored off of them, including TDs by Korey Toomer and Melvin Ingram. The offense was solid, with Keenan Allen devastating the Buffalo pass defense. Can the Chargers capitalize on their primetime appearance at Dallas this Thanksgiving?

Interesting so many are high on the team being a wild card - or taking the division. Bosa, Ingram and Allen will get us there.
