He is actually a decent receiver. Denver just chooses to not throw to their TE, so he never gets any catches. He will never be a great receiver, but he can be moderately productive if given the chance.

This is more like what I was expecting. With new coach who favors the running game and a new DC I expected some players coming in that reflect what they want to do. That said I'm kind of surprised we are not seeing more moves like this on D. Gus and Carrol brought in and sent packing lots of players until they found the ones who fit what they wanted to do.

Virgil Green has been one of those players who consistently teased Bronco fans throughout his career. Athletically gifted, yet never fully reaching the potential most of us hoped he would.

Green was always seen as more of the blocking tight end, and rarely made an impact in the passing game. In 2017 his run blocking took a step back as well. Several games I saw on tape from him, he was putting some bad stuff on film in the run blocking department.Virgil Green Pro Football Focus Grades

Green graded out with a 43.1 overall grade for the season, with 44.3 in the passing game, 43.0 in run blocking, and 72.3 in pass blocking.

Additionally, Green only had two overall positive graded games, and three games with a positive run blocking score. 2018 Status

Jeff Heuerman and Jake Butt, and also Austin Traylor

Again, PFF is hardly a great source. You never know what their grades means because they refuse to discuss what their grading is. Until you know that, how would you know what that means?

The problem with his run blocking is the struggles the Donks have at OT. Neither OT did a good job of working with the TE or inside, and Green was left on his own much of the time. In terms of passing downs, he is often used to supplement the pass blocking, not even getting to release as a receiver, and when they did use him as an outlet, the emphasis of their offense was to push the ball downfield.

No one is saying the guy is great. He is a run blocker who has been a good player in the past, and has been OK as a pass blocker and catching the occasional outlet pass. He is never going to be another Jason Witten type guy who can do both, but if you put the guy in a solid OL he can be part of the solution.

AS far as how much playing time, the only way he will get anywhere near 50% of the snaps is if we are playing with huge leads every game. Henry is the starter and with our receivers, I don't think Green gets that many snaps. Mostly, he will help in obvious run situations and goalline.

Well you can look at the stats for receiving. 22 targets, 14 receptions, 191 yards with 1 TD on a team that didnt have a TE and desperately needed an underneath guy for their QB.

Okung wasn't on that team. And Green typically lines up next to the RT.

Okung played on the team that beat Virgil Green. Before joining the Broncos a couple of years later.

Schofield and Green played on the Broncos SB team

They don't use their TE as a receiver. They don't run them on primary routes. They are 4th or 5th options, and mostly they are used as blockers. Green wasn't even on the field much as a receiver, they used Huemann more as a receiver.

And we aren't using him as a receiver, either so who cares. Henry is the receiver. IF we bring Gates back, he will get some looks as a receiver too. Green will get a few token throws, but if we don't target him and don't throw to him, it doesn't matter. He is coming in to be a backup TE to help the goalline and short yardage running game, something he does well. He is a good run blocker no matter what PFF says.

Far better than our TE as blockers, and they aren't bad. I have no idea where PFF gets their fucked up grades. Maybe a Ouji board.

That wasnt PFF, that was Mile High Report. Virgil was fortunate that there were no free agent TEs, until today. And this is an awful draft class
