McCoy: We're going to beat Denver on Thursday night

Chargers head coach Mike McCoy sends the first shots this week.

ormer Denver Broncos offensive coordinator and current San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy had this to say in his post game press conference following the Chargers 37-14 rout of the New York Giants:

"We're going to beat Denver on Thursday night, not play close."

Okay then... Best of luck with that coach. How many points are you expecting to put up on a team that has piled on over fifty points in three of their thirteen games this season? A team with a 170+ point differential.

Denver clinched the playoffs Sunday and needs only two more wins to ensure at least the second seed in the AFC Playoffs. I cannot imagine that the Broncos are expecting anything less of an outcome when the Chargers come to Denver this Thursday.

This quote will go about as well for San Diego as Shonn Greene giving the Mile High Salute after scoring in the first quarter in the Tennessee Titans game.

Pretty sure this is a misquote. I watched his post game speech to the team and he said they are going to play to beat Denver and not simply to play them close. That's a lot different than saying we are going to beat Denver flat out.

That's what I saw as well. I thought maybe this was a part of the presser they didn't show because saying they will beat Denver and they'll play to beat Denver are two different things. And I don't see McCoy making such a bold statement

Thanks for the link. Still seems like he says the same thing. That they are playing to beat Denver, not to play them close. I think he just tripped up and missed a word.

It's my impression that he was trying to say that he is playing to win, not a Joe Namath-type guarantee, though if you take the words at face value that's what is actually quoted. I'm glad he said it, and if he really meant "we are going to beat Denver" like "we are going to win", who cares, put that shit up as bulletin board material. We have nothing to lose by going in and expecting and acting like we are going to win.
