I think it's clear Merriman wanted to talk about his charity, and the interviewers were making it about him, with a definite air of, "Aw, look, the millionaire former NFL star has had it so hard in life." The focus should have been on the charity and people in need. No more time should have been spent on Merriman's past than perhaps a brief mention to establish his motivation for wanting to give back in this fashion.
