I'm assuming James will be long gone, and I'm picking realistic options at 17
I'm preparing myself, I honestly believe if Lamar Jackson is there at 17, he becomes a Charger.

I feel you, but I just think he's the epitome of what Lynn wants to run his offense. And I get the logic of taking a future starting QB, with Rivers staring down the barrel of retirement, and Jackson a potential star QB who is weak at things Rivers is good at, so he'll have time to learn from that. Can't tell if the love for Jackson is real or a smokescreen. The fact that we now have Jones and Smith as backup QBs gives a lot of credence to that thought, but I really don't want us to take a QB in any round this year. At some point, sooner rather than later, Rivers replacement will need to be drafted but we have a window right now that another player could help much more than a backup QB. -
I would sacrifice having a QB like Lamar Jackson after Rivers hangs 'em up to having a top defensive player at #17, because it seems like this team is close to being a Bowl contender. I would go all-in to try and get Rivers a ring. Maybe I'm being a short-sighted, petulant, too passionate fan of Rivers, but he's my guy on this team. Jackson wouldn't be able to help this team for at least several years, if he can develop at all. If Jackson is drafted, then the team is looking at the long term picture over winning in the next few years, and I'd be disappointed for Rivers.

If James is there, you take him. But he won't be there. In fact, if he's not picked by the top 10-12, I could see someone move up to get him.
(This is also assuming Smith and Edmunds are long gone)
