I heard Charlie Ebersol, the founder of the league, and there were some interesting facts:
- No team owners (all teams are league owned, by the investors)
- No xfl gimmics, real football
- Run day-by-day by Troy Polomalu and J.K. McKay. Not a just a marketing idea with football as a product.
- Will not compete for players with the NFL.
- They entered into NFL cities (Atlanta, Phoenix) only after discussing that with the NFL.
- They already have a TV partner... CBS.
- As for San Diego, they are neutral on the Stadium development competitors.
- Their measure of success will be over years, not just the first year.
I do think it will be an uphill battle, but if they keep their goals modest, they could run this out to be a decent business, maybe to become that actual development league for the NFL.
