Thankfully the preseason ends this week. Let's post some predictions on who will make the roster this year. This one from Eric Williams is pretty good.
COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The Los Angeles ChargersQUARTERBACK (2): Philip Rivers, Geno Smith
Smith wins the No. 2 job over Cardale JonesNic Shimonek is also a practice squad candidate, depending on what happens with Jones and how the Texas Tech product plays the last two preseason games if given an opportunity.
53-Man Roster Projections
Every NFL team must cut its roster to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET Saturday, Sept. 1. Check out NFL Nation's roster projections here.
RUNNING BACK (3): Melvin Gordon, Austin Ekeler, Detrez Newsome
Seventh-round selection Justin Jackson was limited due to a hamstring injury most of training camp, affecting his ability to make the team. The Chargers could look to bring in an experienced veteran to serve as a backup to spell Gordon on early downs, but Newsome has been effective in preseason play.
FULLBACK (1): Derek Watt
The Wisconsin product has looked solid in run blocking, can catch the ball out of the backfield and also contributes on special teams.
WIDE RECEIVER (6): Keenan Allen, Tyrell Williams, Travis Benjamin, Mike Williams, Geremy Davis, Artavis ScottDylan Cantrell, undrafted rookie J.J. Jones -- who had a 72-yard punt return for a score against the second preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks -- and Andre Patton are practice squad candidates.
TIGHT END (2): Virgil Green, Sean Culkin
Either Antonio Gates signs or the Chargers look to grab a tight end from another team during final roster cuts to fill the third tight end spot.
OFFENSIVE LINE (10): Russell Okung, Dan Feeney, Mike Pouncey, Michael Schofield, Joe Barksdale, Forrest Lamp, Sam Tevi, Cole Toner, Scott Quessenberry, Spencer Pulley
With Lamp returning from ACL knee injury and still working his way back into playing shape, the Chargers likely will keep an extra body on the offensive line for depth. Trent Scott, Erick Wren and Zack Golditch are practice squad candidates.
DEFENSIVE LINE (9): Joey Bosa, Melvin Ingram, Brandon Mebane, Darius Philon, Damion Square, Justin Jones, Chris Landrum, Isaac Rochell, Patrick Afriyie
Along with the receivers, defensive line is a deep group for the Chargers. Corey LiugetWhitney Richardson deserves consideration for an active roster spot, but could wind up on the practice squad.
LINEBACKER (7): Denzel Perryman, Kyzir White, Uchenna Nwosu, Jatavis Brown, Kyle Emanuel, Nick Dzubnar, Hayes Pullard
Emanuel, Dzubnar and Pullard are all core special teams players who also provide experienced depth at linebacker.
SECONDARY (9): Casey Hayward, Trevor Williams, Jahleel Addae, Derwin James, Desmond King, Adrian Phillips, Michael Davis, Craig Mager, Rayshawn Jenkins
The Chargers took significant hits to this position group with Jason Verrett and Jaylen Watkins suffering season-ending injuries in training camp. Young players like Tony Brown, Brandon Facyson and A.J. Hendy have a chance to stick around on the practice squad.
SPECIALIST (4): K Caleb Sturgis, KS Roberto Aguayo, P Drew Kaser, LS Mike Windt
