The Chargers had major center and kicker woes entering the offseason. Caleb Sturgis could finally cure the latter problem, while Mike Pouncey will be an update at center. Wait, what am I saying? That's not true at all. Something always goes wrong with the Chargers. I don't know why, but they're the Murphy's Law of the NFL. I don't know why, but disaster will strike in some shape or form most weeks.

    10. Previous rank: No. 12

Solid power-up into the top 10 for the Chargers, who are the favorites to win their division. Don't see any AFC West teams leapfrogging Anthony Lynn's group, although losing Jason Verrett (torn Achilles) and Hunter Henry (torn ACL) hurt, and depth is an issue. This just in: When your starters play well and you lose 36-7 in the preseason, it's clear you've got some cracks and splinters on your bench. Derwin James sure excited a few of the fellas, huh? The Chargers are a playoff team.

If they can get past their bad luck - already losing tight end Hunter Henry and corner Jason Verrett - they should win the AFC West. They have a good passer and outstanding pass rushers.

      6.

The Chargers have been cursed again with offseason injuries (Hunter Henry, Jason Verrett) but are catching a break with Joey Bosa. His work leading the defense will complement a big year for Philip Rivers, Melvin Gordon and Keenan Allen.

If they can avoid bad luck for a change, few flaws to hinder them. Keep an eye on second-year WR Mike Williams in red-zone offense.

      10. Los Angeles Chargers

      2017 record: 9-7
      Post-draft ranking: 12

RB Detrez Newsome. An undrafted rookie out of Western Carolina, Newsome came to life in the second half against the Arizona Cardinals, scoring on a 6-yard run and doing a backflip for his touchdown celebration. He also finished with four receptions for 34 receiving yards. Newsome, who also had a 37-yard run for a score called back due to a clipping penalty, has a chance to earn a roster spot as the No. 3 running back. -- Eric D. Williams

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Chargers FC find themselves in a familiar place when it comes to expectations for the 2018 season. Fans can get excited about the return of future HoFer Antonio Gates, but will he and the Chargers finally put the pieces together for a playoff run?
