Rivers doesn't will his team to come from behind victories. Like Rodgers, Brady, Rothelsiraper, P Manning, Elway, even Russell Wilson. How many times has he done it?
Tom Brady: 34
Ben Roethlisberger: 29
Drew Brees: 28
Eli Manning: 26
Matt Ryan: 26
Mathew Stafford: 26
Philip Rivers: 23
Andy Dalton: 18
Joe Flacco: 18
Alex Smith: 18
Russel Wilson: 15
Derek Carr: 13
Cam Newton: 13
Andrew Luck: 13
Ryan Tannehill: 12
Aaron Rodgers: 12
I always felt that switching to more of a shotgun based offense coupled with not having a real running game hurt Rivers as far as comebacks are concerned. It helped with completion percentage, but hurt in terms of the offense being too predictable.
The same thing goes for Eli Manning who was more or less famous for his 4th quarter comebacks before switching to Mcadoo’s shotgun offense. Now I know a part of the problem is he’s older and not as good, but some of the problem is the offense itself...some of the Giants players (now that they’ve gone back to a more physical style play-action based offense) have come out and said that Mcadoo’s shotgun offense was too predictable.
He has led the league in passing yards and TDs before. His stats are easily good enough. It's playing for a crappy organization and some bad post season injury luck that have hurt him most.
I don't believe he ever led the league in Yards (some of his best years were also Brees' and Manning's best years). He threw 34 TD passes once in a year where Bree also threw 34 TDs, 33 in a year where Aaron Rodgers threw 40, and 32 in a year Manning threw 55.
2017: 2nd in yards, 5th in TDs
2016: 5th in yards, 4th in TDs
2015: 2nd in yards, 12th in TDs
2014: 8th in yards, 8th in TDs
2013: 5th in yards, 4th in TDs
2012: 17th in yards, 9th in TDs
2011: 6th in yards, 8th in TDs
2010: 1st in yards, 5th in TDs
2009: 8th in yards, 6th in TDs
2008: 5th in yards, tied for 1st in TDs with Brees
2007: 15th in yards, 12th in TDs
2006: 9th in yards, 8th in TDs
I guess I look at things differently. The guy has been in the top 9 in passing yards and in TDs in 10 of his 12 seasons as a starter. He isn't in the conversation for all pro or MVP because the Chargers have sucked for years and no player on a team not in the playoffs gets serious consideration. If he played for the Patriots, he'd have multiple rings and this thread wouldn't exist.
That may be true. A couple of more years in the top 10 would make it real hard to overlook. Of course, if we win the super bowl this year, he is a slam dunk.
Los Angeles isn’t generating much hype at the moment, but if the offense can keep playing like it has in the first five weeks, this may be the year that the squad finally becomes a contender
Philip Rivers didn’t like mayonnaise or Brussels sprouts. He wanted a younger brother and good grades. And, like so many 10-year-olds across the country, he dreamed about suiting up for an NFL team.
Only ring counters who think one player can win or lose football games on his own would say no to this question.
edit: Well, ring counters and people who read the question within the context of whether or not he actually will be voted in 1st ballot and realize there's ring counters with real votes.
