Union-Tribune columnist Nick Canepa issues his grades for the ChargersQuarterbacks: B
At unfilled Carson High (Arrowhead West), Philip Rivers deserved so much better (threw for 424 yards and 3 scores but almost had as many drops as he has children). He missed an open TD opportunity early. Travis Benjamin dropped what could have been a TD and then another late. Tyrell Williams dropped a score. Philip threw a terrible pick to stop a drive. Not many teams run up 33 first downs and lose.
Running backs: AReceivers: F+Keenan Allen came up big. Mike Williams made some plays. One thing you need from receivers: They have to catch catchable balls.
Offensive line: A-Mike PounceyDefensive line: C
Missing Joey Bosa and Corey Liuget, not much pass rush. JamesJustin Jones, whoever he is, had a rather large face-mask penalty. Melvin Ingram? One assist on a tackle and 3 QB hits.
Linebackers: DSecondary: D-Special teams: F-Coaching: F
Yet another preventable defeat. Totally unprepared for Hill and Chiefs speed. Some day Anthony Lynn/Ken Whisenhunt will recognize the shotgun/pistol is a terrible short-yardage running formation. Lynn never goes for 2 and foolishly did. One timeout left for a drive at end of the half.
Next opportunity (at Buffalo): A
Prediction: The Bills will have a first down by halftime.
