Nick Canepa's Chargers report card: vs. Chiefs

Nick Canepa's Chargers report card: vs. Chiefs
Chargers fans sound off on Year Two in Los Angeles at 2018 season opener
Hear from Chargers fans -- some returning to StubHub Center, some there for the first time -- about their thoughts on the team's second year in Los Angeles, whether they will be back, opposing fans and more.

    image.pngNick CanepaContact Reporter
Union-Tribune columnist Nick Canepa issues his grades for the ChargersQuarterbacks: B

At unfilled Carson High (Arrowhead West), Philip Rivers deserved so much better (threw for 424 yards and 3 scores but almost had as many drops as he has children). He missed an open TD opportunity early. Travis Benjamin dropped what could have been a TD and then another late. Tyrell Williams dropped a score. Philip threw a terrible pick to stop a drive. Not many teams run up 33 first downs and lose.

Running backs: AReceivers: F+Keenan Allen came up big. Mike Williams made some plays. One thing you need from receivers: They have to catch catchable balls.

Offensive line: A-Mike PounceyDefensive line: C

Missing Joey Bosa and Corey Liuget, not much pass rush. JamesJustin Jones, whoever he is, had a rather large face-mask penalty. Melvin Ingram? One assist on a tackle and 3 QB hits.

    Linebackers: DSecondary: D-Special teams: F-Coaching: F
Yet another preventable defeat. Totally unprepared for Hill and Chiefs speed. Some day Anthony Lynn/Ken Whisenhunt will recognize the shotgun/pistol is a terrible short-yardage running formation. Lynn never goes for 2 and foolishly did. One timeout left for a drive at end of the half.

    Next opportunity (at Buffalo): A
Prediction: The Bills will have a first down by halftime.

I was relatively pleased with the OL play, so that's a positive.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
    The Wasted Decade is done.

Haven't had a chance to watch the game....

Was the defense really that terrible?

On most plays, no. But on five or so plays, they got gashed.

More of a track meet vs. a defensive effort. If not for the two major (or three if you include the missed FGA) flubs on Special Teams, and the huge chunk gains to Hill, the game may have been pretty even. In context, I agree with Canepa's grades. There were a couple of plays by Derwin James that were outstanding... the only real pass defense on Hill in a deep throw to the endzone, and a sack.

Emanuel might get beat in the 40 by Rivers. That was a FB that torched him. Why call a defense with Emanuel in m2m? Part of that falls on GusD for a shit game plan.

Emmanuel is a small DE playing SAM. And it looks like it.

We couldnt contain Hill. We shut down everyone else. Including the run game. We dropped probably 14 points in passes. We gave up 14 in a fluke fumble inside our 10 and a missed tackle by Addae on a HIll TD return. Not to mention a huge chunk play catch gaff by Addae. That should have never been caught. I swear at this point id just roll out Jenkins and James and get them the reps. Missed another FG. Somewhere in that fucking mess the game was lost.

The only person to cover Hill and not give up a pass was James. His CB/Coverage skills are a lot better than he gets credit for. He saved a TD and then followed that up with a sack. Played the entire game. Didnt come off the field or miss a snap on D.

The defense didnt lose this game. Philon and King played well also.

I know the sack totals were non exisitent but i read somewhere that we did get quite a bit of pressure. Landrum and Uchena shared 14 snaps. That sucked asshole.

I saw somewhere on Twitter that the Chargers applied the 4th most pressure on the opposing QB in the last week of games.

Lynn said Nwosu never practiced any position except backing up Ingram. And Ingram never left the field. Can Melvin play Bosa’s spot and Nwosu fill in for him? That gets two superior athletes on the field. Melvin was a hand in the dirt DE in college. TG
