One of the things I really like about our offense is that we have shown we can win either way. We can win with air-first barnburner types and we've shown we can win grind-it-out types. That's a recipe for success in the playoffs. There's no team left in the AFC that we can't hang with offensively. The key is going to be whether we can continue to get enough from the D.
Whichever way we do it, I think it is important to control the clock. I love how the D is playing a lot better, but I don't think they can stand up to an offense being on the field for 85 plays and not give up a bunch of long gains/TD's. If we can minimize their exposure and put extra pressure on the teams we play, make them react to us a bit more, then I think we need to keep doing it.
What I really like is I see a lot of the Patriot formula here (the good parts; not the cheating, arrogance, whining, etc)
1. Superior game planning and preparation
2. An offense that can morph into whatever it takes to win the game against that week's opponent. Would not surprise me if Rivers comes out throwing against Denver if that is what McCoy and Whiz think will work.
3. Key players get hurt; backups step in seamlessly
4. Defense does enough to win even if it takes smoke and mirrors
5. Offense employs the death by 1000 cuts drives that just demoralize and tire the defense
Some of that will depend on who lines up at C. I think they favored the running game so much vs Cinci because Ohrnburger is not as good in pass protection as Hardwick, and they wanted to get him comfortable and the D a little tired before we started throwing. Same with Den. Den is a stronger pass rush group then run stuffers, so give our guys a chance, and force them to play the run, lose some of that explosion from their legs and give our pass blockers the chance to match up a bit better. But Den is also missing their best pass rusher and Shaun Phillips hasn't done much for them lately, so maybe we will.
The real matchup that will be interesting is that John Phillips had such a big role in the outside zone plays in the last game. He wasn't dominant, but well enough to get Mathews to the edge and help get some cutback lanes going. Phillips is out, but so is Von Miller, who is tough to get outside of, especially on those outside zone plays. I haven't seen how well Nate Irvin does defending the outside zone play to his side, so it will be interesting to see how that goes.
I had to do a double take when they posted Rivers first half stats showing he had only attempted 6 passes, completing 5 for 48 yards! I expect that for maybe Wilhelm but Rivers??? Interesting game plan and effectively slow rolled the bungles!
