2018 Week 11 Charger Power Rankings

Bubble deflated a little, but not enough to drop them to the middle third. Chargers are still the #5 seed, as the other 2nd place teams have big issues.

I guess I can no longer say this because the Chargers finally lost to a team not named the Rams or Chiefs. I never understood the hype though. The Chargers got blown out in both games. They barely beat C.J. Beathard at home. Their other six wins are against the Bills, who suck; the Raiders, who suck; the Browns, who saw Baker Mayfield get hurt in the first quarter; the Titans, who shot themselves in the foot repeatedly; the Seahawks, who are mediocre at best; and the Raiders, who, if you didn't see it earlier, suck. None of those teams have winning records except Tennessee.

The Chargers can't defend the middle of the field, and their pass rush isn't very good. I don't trust their offensive line either, and they have a shaky coaching staff and kicking game. Now, Denzel Perryman is out for the year, while Corey Liuget suffered an injury.

Even before it actually happened, the Chargers flirted with losing to the Broncos enough to make Tinder blush. The Bolts had no business falling Sunday, not while playing at home and not when they owned a two-score lead as late as the third quarter. Philip Rivers made a few boneheaded throws, like that second interception, which Von Miller snared. Oh, and the penalties ... 14 of 'em. Then came the total breakdowns in the secondary during the last couple of stanzas of the fourth quarter, making Case Keenum look like his boss out there. A team should never rack up 479 yards of offense at home and not win. The Chargers ran 72 offensive plays, for crying out loud, and converted 60 percent of their third downs. And still they lost. Ugh.

That was a bad home loss to the Broncos. That's not the look of a Super Bowl contender.

The Chargers always deal with a home-field disadvantage in their own stadium, the one thing that keeps them from being totally great. The good news is, despite the loss, they welcomed Joey Bosa back for some needed impact.

The Chargers have to be better in clock management. The AFC West is now likely over.

Thankful for: Anthony Lynn. The no-nonsense head coach for the Chargers started his tenure 0-4 in 2017, but since then the Chargers are 16-6. This season, Lynn has the Chargers at 7-3 and on the verge of making the playoffs for the first time since 2013. Lynn has dealt with the relocation of his franchise to Los Angeles, playing in a temporary home where opposing fans take over the stadium, and the organization cycling through six kickers. Through it all, Lynn has been a steadying influence, holding players accountable for their performance on the field. -- Eric Williams

That one-point loss to Denver stings even more after seeing Kansas City drop their game Monday night. But circle Week 15 for the game of the year in the AFC West.

An idiotic loss was coming; it was only a matter of when. The Chargers did a lot wrong in this one. Even with the Chargers taking the advantage in yards and time of possession, 14 penalties, 2 interceptions, and 3 allowed sacks kept the Broncos in it, and they earned the victory. The Chargers must now regroup and finish the month off strong against Arizona because December offers no leeway.

Despite winning six consecutive games and having a record of 7-2 entering Week 11, the Los Angeles Chargers hadn't gotten a lot of run as a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

Performances like Sunday's home loss to Denver aren't going to help change the perception that the Bolts are a tier below the Chiefs, Patriots and Steelers in the AFC.

It was classic Chargers, in that it was equal parts confusing and maddening. It was a flat showing against an inferior team on paper in which the Chargers outgained Denver by more than 150 yards and led by double-digits in the second half.

"It finally happened," Gagnon said. "The Chargers Chargered against the Broncos, playing down to weaker competition at home. Hard to trust them now, because this is their modus operandi. They don't have much of a home-field advantage at that weird little stadium, and I just don't believe they can go toe-to-toe with AFC heavyweights Kansas City, New England and Pittsburgh. They're probably a one-and-done playoff team with a divisional-round ceiling, but they remain in the top 10 because they're one of many untrustworthy second-tier teams right now."

The Chargers let the Broncos linger in the game for far too long on Sunday and ended up losing on a last-second field goal at home. Despite the hiccup, the Chargers are very much in control of their playoff situation with an 82% chance of making the playoffs. Philip Rivers may be having the best season of his career with an EPA per dropback of .28 and a PACR of 1.13, both ranking third in the NFL. He has generated 3.55 WAR. With key matchups still remaining against the Steelers and Chiefs, the Chargers will have the opportunity to show where they stand in the pecking order of the AFC.
