But that the rub. You have some older vets we have to rely on to generate a pass rush this coming season. But we need to get some young players and start developing them, because it usually takes a while. The longer we wait to draft them, the longer it will be overall.
See ya Larry English.

As of today we have Ingram, Freeney, JJ, English, Keiser, Williams. Assuming 5 spots for OLB, we are already one over.
Then you also take into account that Telesco mentioned that we needed to improve the pass rush, so that would assume he intends to draft pass rush again this year. That means two of the previous 6 are cut. JJ is the most expensive with some age/injury concerns. Freeney is next with those same age/injury concerns. Keiser/Williams are the cheaper development guys that may never develop into anything, but hey they cost nothing. English is another injury guy, but is young still and relatively cheap.
When you think about it, this situation is very similar to the one we had at WR last year. A whole fuckload of questions surround them.
It makes sense to draft another high pick and throw him in the mix and let them battle it out. Injuries may even do the dirty work for Telesco before all is set and done.

Simply put, he's another camp body still. Considering our injury history, Telesco just seems to be covering his ass and keeping his options open.
A potential option that we may not be considering is that the team may decide to cut JJ and have English pair up with Freeney at SOLB. It would accelerate the dead money cap hit from JJ's contract setting up 2015 as a monster cap space year. JJ kinda started breaking down this past year finally. IMO it would be a mistake unless we end up drafting another OLB that they need to make room for.
If we want to save OLB money, I hope we cut Freeney before JJ. Cutting Freeney frees up $3.5M. Cutting JJ only frees up $2.5M.
That said, I am okay with English as a camp body as long as he is not more than that. I am thinking that he could perform like the second coming of Merriman in the preseason and I probably would still be tempted to pass on him due to his very predictable injury history.

English failed to hit minimum playing-time threshold in any year of his rookie deal
Posted by Mike Florio on February 13, 2014, 9:10 PM EST
Plenty of you have asked for more information regarding the fact that Chargers linebacker Larry English, a first-round pick in 2009, won’t be a free agent in 2014.
And so here it is. Even for those who didn’t ask.
English, the 16th pick in 2009, agreed to a contract that included a both a signing bonus and an option bonus the following year. Fourteen of the other top 16 picks signed contracts with a similar structure.
The option bonus, paid in 2010, added a sixth year to the five-year contracts. The option year disappeared if the player participated in 35 percent of the snaps as a rookie, or 45 percent in any of the future years. English failed to hit the triggers in any of the years, from 2009 through 2013.
As a result, the sixth year didn’t void —and English won’t be a free agent.
Even though the NFLPA’s official list of free agent includes English, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that English agrees with the team’s interpretation.
It’s unclear what English would have earned on the open market. For now, he’s due to make $1.54 million. Given his performance over five NFL seasons and the current market for pass rushers, it’s likely he wouldn’t have seen more than that on the open market. He may have even been offered less.Go Rivers!
