Ellerbe's deal is essentially a 3 year deal too with the last two years being a non guaranteed 6.45 and 6 mil. If he's cut after three years, he will have banked about 23mil.
That's what he would bank but obviously the hit to the salary would be less than Butlers hit over those 3 years. Which is what really matters in comparison because we can't predict years 4-7 for Butler.

onald Butler signed a contract extension. Its structure is complex, a three-year deal with an option for four more years, making the entire pact run for potentially seven years for between $51 million and $58 million in total value, a source said Monday. The deal's first three years are worth nearly $20 million. If the option is activated, the next four are worth $8 million to $9.5 million per season

      58 million?

      Holy crap

I see it as a 3 year 20 million deal. Which is pretty fair imo. I think its a short 3 year contract disguised as a 7 year deal. lol

Pretty sad if it's only a 3 year deal. That means he's a dud. A rich dud.

Its sort of hard to commit 7 years to a player who is hurt a lot but has the potential to be great. He was the best player at the position available in free agency and the draft is not good for his replacement. I think if he stays healthy he makes the 20 million look very fair. Ill worry about the 4-7 years when we get there.

Don't know how you can see that.

At 28 years old he wouldn't be worth keeping?

A 3 year contract and the outcome I to let him be a free agent?

To not want to keep him after that means he underperformed.

Obviously. But if it's really a 3 year contract then he didn't live up to front office expectations. Because they have the option to extend it means he didn't live up to who they believed he could be, if it's 'a 3 year contract'.

And he'd be quite a cap hit for those 3 years. To only fail the team

I dont think he will fail the team. I dont think the FO feels that he will. His agent probably wanted a long tern deal and the Bolts wanted something shorter based on injury and not production issues. If he fails the team it will be from injury imo. Not production. I think they paid him a little more than i would have liked based on injury concerns but there really wasn't a lot out their to work with. Hes really the only stack LB out of free agency and the draft that actually fits the team fairly perfectly. I think you have to overpay a little bit under the circumstances. Hes had some bad luck so i think the FO is paying him based on expectations.

Plus with the way the salary cap is jumping over the next couple of years the back-end of his contract may not look too out of whack if he stays healthy.

If he doesn't reach year 4 of this latest contract he would be a failure. You don't pay a very young player 6.5 for three years with a team option to have it only be a 3 year deal.

It's a lot of cap space for a guy that many don't believe in.

Look at the Butler extension thread, nobody wanted him to get paid.
                        And he just did.

How does the life of his contract(at 7 years) compare to Ellerbe?

Now compare it to the 7 year deal Navorro Bowman signed.
