One thing we may not be taking into account is a potential scheme change if we are looking at a guy like Mitchell. This is a quote from Mitchell

“Usually guys in a typical 3-4 are much bigger guys and have a stouter presence,” Mitchell said. “There is a difference between that scheme and Wade’s (Phillips) because Wade’s was more of a straight penetrate, one-gap still, and instead of 4-3, ours was just a hybrid scheme. It’s definitely different because (Crennel’s) is more of a two-gap with those three defensive linemen controlling the line of scrimmage.”
I've mentioned it before, but we would be better off with Wade's type of 3-4 with our personnel that allows our DE to just penetrate vs. control the line of scrimmage and occupy blockers. Pagano was the coach here when Wade was running it so he clearly knows the intricacies of it.

      I've been consistently downing 2 double-doubles at In N Out. I think I might win a heart attack well before I'm 50.

      Yay Chargers. Sign somebody good.

Also to be clear, I think Soliai is completely out of our price range as he's expected to be getting a big offer from ATL. We simply can't compete with teams that have big cap space and are going to be throwing it around.

I really don't know shit about the Texans or Mitchell. Just backing up Yubaking because he seems to get ganged up on a lot.
The Texan defense was a mess last year, but mainly because the offense kept giving the ball away and they lost Cushing. They also had a glaring hole at S that Reed never was able to fill. No CB2 and somewhat mediocre OLB as well.

I guess I now know some shit about the messy Texans.

Last year, I thought King Dunlap was a bad free agent signing. This year, I'll keep my mouth shut about who we sign. I just hope our GM knows what he's doing.

We could have made a legitimate attempt at getting Soliai, but that would have required us to make Soliai the priority that we should have made him by cutting elsewhere.

It's funny that it might be Atlanta that gets him because I have done their mock draft and learned some things about them. There was some talk that they would end up re-signing their own free agent DTs, but based upon what you are saying, that may not be so.

So they are going after Soliai. They were 31st in YPC against last year. Oh well, at least one team with a deficient run defense gets it. Too bad it isn't us.

They have about 25 million in cap space. We have much, much less. It doesn't matter. I'm not against bringing in a NT, I am against spending all our FA dollars on one when we have other glaring holes we can fill.

Cutting Clary and Royal would have more than paid for Soliai. Clary is not good and is easily replaceable. Royal is solid, but replaceable through the draft. Soliai would solidify our run defense and help our pass defense out some as well in several different ways.

It doesn't matter how much cap room Atlanta has. What matters is how much they would be willing to offer given the holes that they have.

But I agree with you that it does not look like we ever seriously considered pursuing Soliai based upon the reports that you have referenced. It's a shame.

The Bolts can get a NT in the draft if they want one. Both Ellis and Carrethers should be there in the 4th or even the 5th, both are true NTs.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
                      Let’s win one for Mack.

Not sure where you have been living, but I said our moves would make our 2013 defense worse than our 2012 defense due to lack of quality depth and key losses. I am pretty sure that that is exactly what happened.

I said that Phillips was not done and would be better than Freeney. He was better than Freeney, a lot better than Freeney. We lacked the run stopping presence that I was concerned would be lost without us having Franklin. That's exactly what happened as we went from 5th to 27th in YPC against.

Our offense turned out to be great and that and some great smoke and mirrors by Pagano somehow hid our glaring defensive weaknesses that were all over the place just enough for us to get by.

But now, a year later, could we please actually fix the defense and stop pussy footing around with the likes of Mitchell?!

Yes, that's true, but my concern is that if we add Mitchell, Telesco may decide that we are set at NT and let Nix (if available), Ellis, et cetera pass us by without taking any of them.
