Chargers chat with Michael Gehlken (03/24/2014)

    Monday March 24, 2014
11:01 Michael Gehlken: Welcome to this week's chat. I'm here to take your questions, Chargers-based or otherwise. The first couple waves of free agency are done. Things are more quiet now. Mike McCoy and team executives are currently in Orlando for annual league owner meetings. Back home, the Chargers' primary focus is the May draft. Let's get started.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:01 Michael Gehlken
    11:01 [Comment From RussRuss: ]
Do you think there is a valid reason to trade up to get somebody specific? Like Khalil Mack?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:01 Russ
11:04 Michael Gehlken: I don't see the Chargers trading up in the first round, given the price of sparing a draft pick or two. Trading back is probably more appealing. Chances are the team stays at pick 25.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:04 Michael Gehlken
    11:04 [Comment From FredFred: ]
Will Telesco trade up for Anthony Barr? What's the likelihood of trading into the top ten?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:04 Fred
11:06 Michael Gehlken: Again, I wouldn't look for that. This would be a nice year to be in the top 10. Some good pass-rush specialists toward the top of the draft. But the Chargers likely won't be a factor there. Too costly.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:06 Michael Gehlken
    11:07 [Comment From Barry OBarry O: ]
Philip rivers is in his Prime but how important is it to draft and start grooming a new Quarterback this year or next

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:07 Barry O
11:09 Michael Gehlken: The Chargers are comfortable with their reserve quarterbacks as they stand today. Kellen Clemens brings veteran support. Brad Sorensen is developing. It'd be a huge disservice to the veterans on this team if, given the Chargers' limited resources, they were investing in the future when last year's playoff run proved this team has every reason to be thinking about the present. Terrible message that would send to the locker room.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:09 Michael Gehlken
    11:10 [Comment From RobertRobert: ]
You said earlier you felt the chargers would address the NT position via free agency. Do you still feel it's in the plan?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:10 Robert
11:11 Michael Gehlken: The Chargers made a strong early run at NT Earl Mitchell. He chose to play In Miami's 4-3 defense, and that was that. Not sure if they aggressively pursued another veteran, but I can tell you they were underwhelmed with the depth of the nose tackle market. Sean Lissemore is a name to note. Inside Chargers Park, he's thought of higher than most outside realize.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:11 Michael Gehlken
11:12 [Comment From Salavdor RomSalavdor Rom: ]
Do you think the chargers are interested in DeSean Jackson? Telesco said he wanted to add speed on offense and return game.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:12 Salavdor Rom
11:16 Michael Gehlken: If the Chargers turned "salary cap mode" off, I could see DeSean Jackson here. That isn't the world they live in. While it'd be something if they pulled off a move like that, I don't see it happening.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:16 Michael Gehlken
    11:16 [Comment From JarredJarred: ]
Is it safe to say that Danario Alexander is done in San Diego?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:16 Jarred
11:19 Michael Gehlken: Fairly safe to say. I'll leave open the possibility he has an incredible rehab, the Chargers try him out, and sign him to a low-salary, incentive-laden deal. That said, realistically, you won't see Danario in a Chargers uniform again. It's a shame. So much potential. Everyone wanted to see what he could do healthy.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:19 Michael Gehlken
    11:20 [Comment From GuestGuest: ]
why havent they restructured Clary's contract? Seems crazy to pay him 5 million this year.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:20 Guest
11:22 Michael Gehlken: $4.55 million technically with a $6.25 million cap hit, but yes, point made. I haven't received a straight answer as to why nothing has happened there yet, but I'm told action still could be coming. The key thing to remember is the team has time. It's not a roster bonus that was due on the third day of the league year -- as the case was with Derek Cox's contract. It's certainly a situation worth monitoring.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:22 Michael Gehlken
    11:23 [Comment From GuestGuest: ]
Who starts opposite Wright at corner week 1?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:23 Guest
11:23 Michael Gehlken: The Chargers don't know that answer yet. Ask again on May 9.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:23 Michael Gehlken
11:26 Michael Gehlken: I'll add this about cornerback, and I've written this much: there appears to be no doubt the Chargers will draft at least one in May. They take comfort knowing the season doesn't start today. We same them add Brandon Ghee and re-sign Richard Marshall in free agency. Building that corps is an ongoing focus.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:26 Michael Gehlken
    11:27 [Comment From JarredJarred: ]
Any news on whether the Chargers will be rewarded any compensatory draft picks this year?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:27 Jarred
11:30 Michael Gehlken: Computer froze there. Had to restart. ... That news will come this week, possibly as early as today. It's based on an elaborate equation that not even people "in the know" know. We'll find out soon enough.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:30 Michael Gehlken
    11:31 [Comment From FredFred: ]
How much can we expect to see Brandon Taylor next season?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:31 Fred
11:32 Michael Gehlken: He ended last season firmly behind Marcus Gilchrist and Jahleel Addae at strong safety. We'll see if Brandon's knee gives him a chance to close a gap in the coming months. Addae currently has a brighter outlook, but Brandon will get his chance to compete.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:32 Michael Gehlken
    11:33 [Comment From RussRuss: ]
Technical question. Is there a practice squad in the offseason or did they all become free agents at season's end?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:33 Russ
11:34 Michael Gehlken: There is no practice squad. But you can sign players to a reserve-future contract, which ensures they'll be on the 90-man roster and can train with the team when it begins voluntary workouts in April.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:34 Michael Gehlken
    11:34 [Comment From DanDan: ]
I like that Floyd is recovering to the point he can have a healthy and productive life. With that said why is he still on the roster and what incentive is there to keep him on the roster?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:34 Dan
11:38 Michael Gehlken: There is no financial incentive to release him. He is under contract. He is still working toward a return. He hasn't retired. Maybe, in a few months, it comes to that. But the Chargers owe it to Malcom and themselves to let this long rehab play out a little longer. That said, in the meantime, the Chargers are preparing themselves for the possibility his career is over.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:38 Michael Gehlken
    11:39 [Comment From DanDan: ]
Is chris gronkowski still on the team?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:39 Dan
11:40 Michael Gehlken: No. He was waived-injured last fall. Likely the closest thing the Chargers will carry to a fullback on their Week 1 roster is David Johnson, the former Steelers tight end. He played some fullback in Pittsburgh as well.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:40 Michael Gehlken
    11:40 [Comment From AlvAlv: ]
How much longer until the Chargers are free from AJ Smith's salary cap legacy? Next season? Season after?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:40 Alv
11:42 Michael Gehlken: Next season. Jared Gaither and Robert Meachem both come off the books in 2015. This year, they count for $7.75 million in dead money against the cap.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:42 Michael Gehlken
11:43 [Comment From Justin DanielJustin Daniel: ]
I thought Kwame Geathers showed alot of promise in the preseason last year, am I crazy to think he could be the answer?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:43 Justin Daniel
11:44 Michael Gehlken: He was inactive the majority of last season for a reason. He'll have to make a sizable jump from year one to year two. Possible but not probable.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:44 Michael Gehlken
11:45 [Comment From Sergio from TijuanaSergio from Tijuana: ]
Where are the chargers going to upgrade their returners situation? Is Kerwynn Williams a consideration or is draft pick coming for that?

Monday March 24, 2014 11:45 Sergio from Tijuana
11:49 Michael Gehlken: Kerwynn Williams definitely has kick-return ability. Bu it's more ideal the Chargers' returner ends up being a WR as opposed to a RB. Williams, as a kick returner, would mean the team carries a fourth running back on game day in addition to Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown. Four RBs with four TEs is a bit heavy. The Chargers worked out WR/KR Marc Mariani last week. That's a good example of someone they could add for the role. ... Worth adding that we'll see what WR Tobais Palmer can do this preseason.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:49 Michael Gehlken
    11:50 [Comment From AlvAlv: ]
You seemed pretty certain Charlie Whitehurst would return; did Whisenhunt offer a chance to be a starter in Tenn?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:50 Alv
11:54 Michael Gehlken: Charlie Whitehurst was Plan A for the Chargers. They wanted him back. The opportunity to play behind Jake Locker is higher in Nashville than behind Philip Rivers in San Diego. The contract offer also was strong, and the fit, with Ken Whisenhunt, was there. The Chargers are very comfortable with Kellen Clemens as a Plan B, moving quickly to sign him after Whitehurst left. Jo-Jo Wooden, the team's director of player personnel, was in New York when the Jets drafted Clemens in 2006.

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:54 Michael Gehlken
    11:55 [Comment From BillBill: ]
The NT position seems that it will be a problem this next season. Where will the answer come from? Ok, the team is high on Sean Lissemore, but you just said that Geathers is not the answer and Jerideau is the only other NT. How does the team view Jerideau?

    Monday March 24, 2014 11:55 Bill
12:00 Michael Gehlken: Byron Jerideau worked behind Geathers in camp before a season-ending shoulder injury. They like Geathers, especially, and Jerideau enough that both are on the roster today. Few can play the nose tackle position at an adequate level as a rookie, and these two were undrafted free agents. They share the chance a develop.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:00 Michael Gehlken
12:01 [Comment From Sergio from TijuanaSergio from Tijuana: ]
The chargers seems forget Rivers at certain points late in the season, do you expect the chargers to be more balanced in their playcalling under Reich, 6 pass first halfs is ridiculous with a franchise QB?

Monday March 24, 2014 12:01 Sergio from Tijuana
12:07 Michael Gehlken: Look at this offseason so far. The Chargers signed a third running back. They added a blocking tight end. They re-signed Chad Rinehart, returning last year's entire starting O-line. Clearly, they're built to run the football heavily in 2014. But they haven't and won't begin to enter games saying, "We want to throw the ball six times by halftime." Occasionally, Rivers takes a pass play out of the huddle and, based on his read, checks into a run at the line of scrimmage. That's how you might see that number. But the Chargers want to throw the football. Today, I'd argue they're better built to run the ball. Rivers needs another quality WR or two.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:07 Michael Gehlken
12:09 [Comment From Dan AnelloDan Anello: ]
With respect to the Corner position. Brandon Ghee is an unknown value, as is Steve Williams. Obviously, we will be looking for one in the draft....but I still am puzzled as to why we did not look for a more qualified Corner in free agency. Richard Marshall is not going to cut it. Any chance that we are still looking for a corner? If so, who might they be looking at?

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:09 Dan Anello
12:10 Michael Gehlken: Don't look for a big cornerback signing in free agency. The Chargers are ready to invest there, but it will be in the draft.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:10 Michael Gehlken
    12:10 [Comment From RobRob: ]
Do you think a 1st round wide receiver is out of the question.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:10 Rob
12:12 Michael Gehlken: Based on pure need and the talent that could be available, I see the attraction. In most years, it might be enough to pull the trigger. But I really believe the first-round pick is devoted to a defensive talent. I'd be fairly shocked otherwise.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:12 Michael Gehlken
    12:13 [Comment From GuestGuest: ]
Michael, should we expect any more free agent moves before the draft?

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:13 Guest
12:15 Michael Gehlken: There probably will be some moves. Just don't expect to recognize many, if any, of the names. The team continues to track which players are released elsewhere. It scouts. It works out guys. Free agency is an ongoing process.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:15 Michael Gehlken
12:15 [Comment From Sergio from TijuanaSergio from Tijuana: ]
Why haven't the chargers made a serious attempt to resign Woodhead or Mathews before they hit the open market?

Monday March 24, 2014 12:15 Sergio from Tijuana
12:17 Michael Gehlken: It's not too late. If interested, the Chargers could extend one before the season or afterward. Neither becomes a free agent until next March.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:17 Michael Gehlken
    12:18 [Comment From JeffJeff: ]
Hello Michael, just an opinion. I don't understand all the "window" talk with Rivers afterall he is just 32. This is STILL younger than the best QB's out there named Brady, Manning, Brees, Roethlisburger, and similar to Rodgers, Eli, and Romo. The way I see it Rivers still has at least 5 more elite level years. Thanks

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:18 Jeff
12:19 Michael Gehlken: Not really a question, but I agree. Rivers has plenty of good football ahead of him.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:19 Michael Gehlken
    12:19 [Comment From TPTP: ]
Does Mathews have an option year in 2015 in the contract

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:19 TP
12:20 Michael Gehlken: It voided. His deal expires next March.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:20 Michael Gehlken
    12:21 [Comment From RobRob: ]
Is there really any chance Barr is there when they pick? I don't think so. So they must be mildly entertaining the thought of moving up.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:21 Rob
12:21 Michael Gehlken: If they love him and he falls, it's possible. But if you're talking about moving from No. 25 to the top 10, that becomes very, very costly for a team that needs its draft picks.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:21 Michael Gehlken
    12:22 [Comment From MarkMark: ]
Hi Michael, so after not initially knowing much about Brandon Ghee, I have to say he sure looks the part, and it looks to date his issue has been about staying healthy. What's the word among the team, can this guy be a find like a Rhienhart, Dunlap, and Lissemore from last year? Thanks

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:22 Mark
12:24 Michael Gehlken: They like his college tape. Unfortunately, because of injuries, there isn't much NFL tape from which to base an evaluation. They are definitely intrigued by him. I know they signed Richard Marshall, too, but Ghee was the one given the longer contract with a signing bonus. It's likely he makes the Week 1 roster. They're eager to see, when healthy, what he can do.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:24 Michael Gehlken
12:26 [Comment From Sergio from TijuanaSergio from Tijuana: ]
Telesco talked about adding speed to this team, where will they add the deep threat that seems to be lacking in the WR core?

Monday March 24, 2014 12:26 Sergio from Tijuana
12:28 Michael Gehlken: Tom Telesco comes from a place that found T.Y. Hilton in the late third round. It depends what the draft gives them, but it's possible the Chargers look to address their offensive need late Day 2 or on Day 3 of the draft.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:28 Michael Gehlken
    12:28 [Comment From KeithKeith: ]
I am just not sold on the free agent signings of Denver. I think the Chargers can beat them for the AFC West title. Your opinion?

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:28 Keith
12:30 Michael Gehlken: I'm from San Diego. I've seen the Chargers long enough to know championships aren't won on paper. The Broncos deserve to be the favorite, but you can't crown someone in March. With a good draft and development of players currently on the roster, I think the Chargers can compete.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:30 Michael Gehlken
    12:32 [Comment From TimTim: ]
How many total picks do the Chargers have in this years draft? can you break them down per round? Not including the comp. picks obviously.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:32 Tim
12:33 Michael Gehlken: It's straightforward enough this year. Seven picks, 25th overall in each round.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:33 Michael Gehlken
    12:34 [Comment From TimTim: ]
With the signing of Butler the bolts have a young intriuging set of MLB's starting for them over the next few years. How satisfied was Telesco with Te'o's perfoermance? How high does Te'o's overall upside project?

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:34 Tim
12:35 Michael Gehlken: The Chargers believe he has real upside. They expect a big jump from him season one to two. But they also know they needed more depth at inside linebacker. Kavell Conner was an important signing. He can contribute on special teams as well.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:35 Michael Gehlken
    12:35 [Comment From GuestGuest: ]
How's Freeney's recovery going? I'm excited to see him and Ingram on the field together next year.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:35 Guest
12:37 Michael Gehlken: Everything I hear about Dwight Freeney's recovery from quad tendon surgery has been positive. Tom Telesco generally considers him a bit of a freak for his recovery speed. It's too early to declare this rehab the latest success, but so far, I've heard of no setbacks to date.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:37 Michael Gehlken
    12:37 [Comment From TyTy: ]
Is Jahleel Addai the answer to seemingly endless black hole at Safety we Charger fans have long been accustomed to?

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:37 Ty
12:40 Michael Gehlken: The Chargers are very high on him, and they have reason to be. Addae was a running back coming out of high school in Florida. The safety position is still relatively new to him. He saw heavy playing time late last season. He is learning beside Weddle. Addae hits like a missile with its tracking device removed, but he works hard and plays fast. We'll see how good he gets.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:40 Michael Gehlken
    12:43 [Comment From MarkMark: ]
what is the chance we get our hands on the NT from the Patriots?

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:43 Mark
12:44 Michael Gehlken: Vince Wilfork remains a Patriot. He is still under contract. I know Donald Butler would love it, but the scenario might not become real unless New England releases him. That's no certainty.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:44 Michael Gehlken
    12:45 [Comment From ParkerParker: ]
I love the idea of adding more beef to the offensive line in the early rounds. I could see it really bringing the offense to another level by continuing to improve the run game and keeping Rivers upright. Do you see this as a possibility?

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:45 Parker
12:49 Michael Gehlken: You rarely go wrong fortifying your team up front. We talked so much about offensive line this time last year. There is still room for improvement. If the Chargers love a guard in the third round, maybe someone who can develop at center, I wouldn't rule it out. But I still believe this will be a defense-heavy draft, particularly in the early rounds.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:49 Michael Gehlken
    12:49 [Comment From TyTy: ]
What is the prognosis on Malcolm Floyd? Is there even a remote possibility he suits up at all next year? I believe most Charger fans (including myself)think we've seen the last of him.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:49 Ty
12:51 Michael Gehlken: The possibility is very real Floyd doesn't play again. But as long as he continues to progress and wants to play, no one should officially rule anything out.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:51 Michael Gehlken
12:54 [Comment From Sergio from TijuanaSergio from Tijuana: ]
Were the chargers interested in any corner in free agency? Alterraun Verner's signed what seemed to be a very reasonable deal, plus his adept at zone coverage Pagano likes so much?

Monday March 24, 2014 12:54 Sergio from Tijuana
12:55 Michael Gehlken: The Chargers did not express any interest in Verner, I'm told. They entered free agency with a good idea their big investment at cornerback would come in the draft.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:55 Michael Gehlken
12:55 [Comment From Charger DaveCharger Dave: ]
Do you have any follow up to the Titan returner the Chargers looked at?

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:55 Charger Dave
12:56 Michael Gehlken: He re-signed with the Titans shortly after the Chargers worked him out.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:56 Michael Gehlken
12:57 [Comment From Marco ValleMarco Valle: ]
Is it true that hot dogs prices are gonna drop this years at the q?

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:57 Marco Valle
12:58 Michael Gehlken: I have no idea. But I will do my best to find out.

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:58 Michael Gehlken
12:59 [Comment From Charger DaveCharger Dave: ]
Who is the back up to Hardwick on the Roster right now?

    Monday March 24, 2014 12:59 Charger Dave
1:01 Michael Gehlken: The backup center, as of today, is Nick McDonald. I'd expect the Chargers add anothe center-guard. Rich Ohrnberger remains available. The team also could go younger, perhaps developing someone taken in the draft. McDonald was out of football all of last season after the Patriots waived him in July.

    Monday March 24, 2014 1:01 Michael Gehlken
    1:02 [Comment From Tony from O-sideTony from O-side: ]
How do the Chargers feel about the depth at Left Tackle?

    Monday March 24, 2014 1:02 Tony from O-side
1:04 Michael Gehlken: Michael Harris impressed them last year before a season-ending ankle injury that required surgery. They like him. It wouldn't surprise to see him as the swing tackle on the Week 1 roster.

    Monday March 24, 2014 1:04 Michael Gehlken
1:06 Michael Gehlken: Alright, two hours in, think we'll call it a wrap. Thanks everyone for participating. Have a great day.

He wasn't exactly dealing with insightful questions. "Will the Chargers draft a QB of the future" "No". I would have said "That's fucking stupid" but that's just me.

Yeah but it was "generic answer that sits on the fence"

Maybe there was really nothing to say? In response to those questions, anyway.

I'd say the top 3 questions were asked.

                NT?
                CB?
                WR?

                Were they answered?

Beat writers usually don't know anything anyway. It is what it is.

Not complaining. Just an observation. He didn't say anything while showing no personality.

WTF is he supposed to say?

" telesco told me we are going corner with the first pick"

"Mike McCoy said if telesco doesn't go with WR with one of the first two picks he'll quit"
