Phillips was a good pass rusher for us for years because he had a great first step. He beat OT off the ball and often got the big sacks because of it. And even when he didn't get sacks he was effective at gaining leverage.

After he hurt his foot a couple of years ago, he hasn't had that burst. He gets a lot of clean up sacks. He also is losing the explosion and endurance in his legs. He had 9.5 and 10 sacks the last 2 years. But he, was far more active early in the season then late. He did get 2 sacks in the playoffs, both against us, after the week off. Looking at his snap count, he had light(er) weeks the prior to getting the sack this season against us when he fooled Fluker with a nice move in week 15 (14th game). 2 years ago, he got 2.5 sacks in a late game vs teh Jets, but everyone was getting loads of sacks that game. Here is the break down by game.

Phillips seems to be hanging on, but just using the above, you have to think he is showing signs of aging. Better too soon, then too late. Besides, the locker room stuff kinda kills it too.

          Neat stats.

Now compare those to all Chargers OLBs over the last 2 seasons

he should only show the stats for hurries since that is more important.

And what about Keiser's INT vs. Manning? Maybe that doesn't happen and we don't make the playoffs. Maybe Philips gets hurt just like Freeney and English did. You can't just assume a player would have had the same effect. Shit maybe Ingram is IR'd and he's not even given the opportunity to come back.

Going back and reliving past decisions is just a waste of time because there are always a multitude of variables you can't even begin to account for.
Technically, you are correct. There are infinite possibilities. Maybe if we had played Whitehurst all year, we would have done better than we actually did because he would have thrown that one key pass so poorly that it hit the defender on the back of the leg and kicked forward in the air to a WR in stride that was not even the intended receiver for the key season saving TD. You can always make up stuff like that, but that doesn't make it very likely to happen.

My view is that in the same way that Vincent Jackson probably would have better for this team than Vincent Brown, that Dontari Poe probably would have been better than Sean Lissemore, and that Donald Brown will probably be better than Ronnie Brown in 2014, Phillips would likely have been better than Keiser for us because we are talking about one player that is significantly better than the other in each case. The result is not guaranteed because of random events that can happen as you note, but it is guaranteed that Phillips was a more talented player than Keiser in 2013 when both were healthy.

Phillips would have helped us to win and his absence from the Broncos would have really hurt them with Miller's issues. We screwed ourselves both ways (made us worse and the Broncos better) by not keeping him.
I think one of the biggest reasons we won last year was our team chemistry. If Phillips were to negatively affect that chemistry, we probably don't make the playoffs.

Where does all the bad team guy stuff come from? Phillips wasn't in the best football shape and liked to party too much, but I didn't think we was the cancer he's being made out to be.

In part, yes. But many talented players conduct themselves similarly. I still don't get the hate level here, except for the fact that he played for the enemy last year.
