    ESPN WR's preview

We continue our examination of positional needs on the San Diego Chargers' roster with ESPN NFL Insider Matt Williamson by focusing on the wide receiver group.

We continue our examination of positional needs on the San Diego Chargers' roster with ESPN NFL Insider Matt Williamson by focusing on the wide receiver group.

Williamson likes second-year pro Keenan Allen as a foundation at receiver, but believes the Chargers need to add more speed and depth at this position.

Chargers receiver depth: Projected starters -- SE Keenan Allen, FL Vincent Brown, slot receiver Eddie Royal. Reserves -- Seyi Ajirotutu, Malcom Floyd, Dontrelle Inman, Tobais Palmer.

What's your evaluation of San Diego's talent level at receiver?

Williamson: "As much as I like Allen, to ask him to improve dramatically in one season may be asking too much.

"He's a really good receiver, but he does not have the athletic ability of an A.J. Green or a Julio Jones. He could be close to his ceiling already.

"He uses his body really well. He's an ad*****d route runner, has good hands and is physical. But he's not fast. Teams will have another year to study him, and they're not afraid of the deep ball against him."

Williamson said that Royal had a good year in 2013, but is disappointed so far in Brown's development, whom he thought could have an impact like former Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens receiver Derrick Mason.

Williamson added the development of speedy tight end Ladarius Green helps to mask some of the San Diego's deficiencies at receiver.

What do they need to accomplish this offseason to improve?

Williamson: "This is a really deep receiver draft, so there is help on the horizon. A guy with size and speed would be great."

Williamson said LSU's Odell Beckham would be an ideal fit for the Chargers, but is not sure if he will be available at the end of the first round. He also pointed to Indiana receiver Cody Latimer and Mississippi's Donte Moncrief as Day 2 possibilities.
I think he makes a good point about teams not worrying about Allen's deep ball, although I think that was much more by design with him just not those types of routes. It will be interesting to see how teams try to defend him this year. They can't just press him because he's just so explosive off the line and uses his hands well to get loose. If teams bring the safety closer to the line they risk Green blowing by them.

Chalk up another pundit that thinks Brown was a disappointment.

I'd take 72-catch, nearly 1100-yard, 6-8 TD seasons from Allen every year. There are very few Andre Johnsons, Megatrons, and Larry Fitzgeralds in the NFL.

Teams can discount or not worry about Allen deep, short, whatever, and pay the price. He's a stud. I think this ceiling analysis will look silly in the long run.

Don't see how we don't come out this draft w/o another stud WR.

Allen doesn't have the speed to run past double coverage, but most WR don't. Featured WR tend to be guys like Allen, athletic and good route runners. Not too many of the best WR are true burners, so I am not sure how that is an issue. That is why we need the complimentary guy to help stretch the D. Then, with the rest of our receivers spreading teams out, Allen has enough speed/route running to get past a lot of DB. But that is why we really could use a speed guy to compliment him. And while you can knock our teams deep speed, we still have very good quickness at all our spots, making it almost impossible to stop our passing game completely, as our offensive performance last year demonstrates.

Fortunately, Green is just about the fastest TE in football, he unlike most, he can also challenge a D deep. While teams love to double WR using a 2 deep zone, Green makes that coverage dicy, since I can't think of any MLB who can run with Green in a 2 deep set, letting him split the S and burn the middle of just about any D. We can't prevent teams from playing 3 deep, but 3 deep coverages can't blanket all the short routes, and our short passing game keeps rolling.

A fast WR just about has to be one of our top priorities. I still think Allen is primed to be one of the better featured WR in all of football, provided he improves his reads and how to sit down between short zone defenders, which was something he tends to struggle with at times.

Larry Fitzgerald ran a 4.63, just a reminder. No reason Allen can't improve, don't believe this ceiling BS. Best WR ever Rice was not a burner. This comes up every year and is getting old. I understand the want for a speed guy to compliment Allen but Allen had a great start and could be a solid number one for years. Look for him to continue developing and gain more confidence.

Id be fine with Moncrief in the 1st. I think Cooks and Moncrief are great fits for this offense.

Yep, I'd be okay with either. FWIW, Moncrief seems more NFL ready than Benjamin, IMHO.

2014 Pro Days: Indiana's Latimer, Texas' Davis show off health, speed Rob Rang The Sports Xchange/CBSSports.com

More NFL offseason: Mock Drafts | Prospect Rankings | Pro Days | Top free agents

Their workouts may have taken place hundreds of miles away from each other but the news out of their respective on-campus Pro Days was good on Wednesday for both Indiana's Cody Latimer and Texas' Mike Davis, two underrated talents in the deepest position in the 2014 draft.

The two well-built playmakers were invited to the Scouting Combine last month but were unable to work out there due to foot injuries. The 6-foot-2 (and a half), 215 pound Latimer was recovering from a broken foot. Davis, 6-0, 197 pounds, was unable to participate due to an injury in his right foot.

At their Pro Day workouts, however, each showcased the straight-line speed to catch the attention of scouts.

Latimer, who is still recovering from the injury and therefore did not participate in shuttle drills or even the positional workout, was able to run the 40-yard dash, clocking in at an impressive 4.44, according to a report from NFL.com.

Latimer, who led all receivers with 23 reps of 225 pounds at the Combine, also recorded an impressive 39-inch vertical jump on Wednesday.

A total of 19 teams attended the workout with the New York Jets and San Diego Chargers represented by general managers John Idzik and Tom Telesco, according to the report.

Latimer is currently rated as NFLDraftScout.com's No. 24 overall receiver and a 5th round prospect. He's a bit raw as a route-runner but the physical talent is certainly there to warrant development. The junior was just the fifth Hoosier in school history to exceed 1,000 receiving yards in a single season, an accomplishment that helped him earn team MVP honors in 2013.

Due to the disappointing 2013 campaign that ultimately cost head coach Mack Brown his job, Davis has also flown relatively low on the radar, given his fairly obvious talent.

Despite a down year for virtually every one else on the offensive side of the ball, Davis caught a career-high eight touchdowns in 2013 (four times more than any other Longhorn). That success helped him earn an invitation to the Senior Bowl, where his reliable routes and hands caught my attention.

On Wednesday, Davis was clocked between 4.46-4.48 according to a scout on hand for the workout, demonstrating the athleticism which earned him a ranking of 18th on NFLDraftScout.com's receiver board.

The Longhorns' top prospect -- edge rusher Jackson Jeffcoat -- elected to sit on his Combine times. He did, however, perform in defensive end and linebacker drills, showing good agility and speed but less-than-ideal hands, according to the scout.

The 6-foot-3, 247 pound Jeffcoat is the reigning Hendricks Award winner as the nation's top defensive end and ranks 80th overall on NFLDraftScout.com's board.

I like Latimer, just not sure wtf is gonna happen in the second round. There could be a massive WR run.

I'm hopeful we get some of the OLB to fall to us though.

The 24th-rated WR...in the 2nd round? There would have to be one hell of a run on WRs to justify that pick, don't you think?
