    Amazing Stat

This is from the U/T yesterday. Not even the great Sid Gillman could come close to McCoy's record vs playoff teams.

    Matching up

Record of Chargers coaches vs. playoff-bound teams in the Super Bowl Era

    Mike McCoy 5-2, .714

    Norv Turner 9-21, .333.

    Marty Schottenheimer 9-17, .346.

    Mike Riley 2-15, .118

    June Jones 0-3, .000

    Kevin Gilbride 1-6, .143

    Bobby Ross 11-21, .343

    Dan Henning 4-16, .200

    Al Saunders 5-9, .357

    Don Coryell 16-29, .356

    Tommy Prothro 1-17, .056

    Ron Waller 0-1, .000

    Harland Svare 1-10-1, .125

    Charlie Waller 2-4-1, .333

    *Sid Gillman 5-12-1, .306

Gillman, inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983, directed the Chargers to five American Football League Championship Games from 1960-65. The Super Bowl Era began in 1966.

Interesting, but it is limited to regular season games vs eventual playoff teams. And, only in the SB era.

Disturbing to me is that no one other than McCoy (and maybe Gilman, if they include pre-SB) is even close to .400, even Coryell.

You have to keep in mind how small the sample size is. Things get skewed one way or the other when the sample size is small.

Very true, however, it's pretty awesome that McCoy already has more wins in this category than Riley, Jones, Gilbride, Henning, Prothro & Svare and is tied (so far) with Gilman & Saunders.

And hopefully in a couple of seasons he'll have surpassed Gilman for championships as well.

This is true, but you also have to consider how the playoff format has changed over the years. From 67 to 69 only 4 teams qualified for the playoffs. From 70 to 77 (after the AFL merger) 8 teams qualified. From 78 to 89 it was 10 teams and ever since 1990 it has been 12 teams.

              Just a little context
