Nobody knew Elway would be THAT good.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

The hell with Elway (proud member of the top 5 overrated QBs of all time). We could have had Bruce Matthews, Dan Marino and Darrell Green in round 1 without trading up at all. Score that 1 way better QB and two other Hall of Famers. In fact, with hindsight we could have had:

            1-5 Bruce Matthews
            1-20 Dan Marino
            1-22 Darrell Green
            4-95 Greg Townsend
            6-141 Reggie Roby
            7-192 Richard Dent
            8-202 Mark Clayton
            9-245 Tim Krumrie
            10-272 Jesse Sapolu
            11-304 Karl Mecklenburg
            11-307 Anthony Carter
            12-314 Bill Bates
            12-329 Nate Newton

That would have been an "okay" draft.

I know you realize this, but you can apply that sort of 'what if' scenario to almost ANY draft in hindsight. I realize that having THREE #1s is a rarity, but even in the years we didn't have multiple high-round picks, if you look at a draft 3-4 years down the road and then allow yourself a 'do over', you'd be looking a hell of a lot better in (probably) ALL cases. Let's apply that theory to the 2011 Draft, where we had a #1, two #2s, and two #3s:

Pick # We took We could/should have taken
18 Cory Liuget Jimmy Smith, CB
              Adrian Clayborn, DE
              Phil Taylor, DT
50 Marcus Gilchrist Greg Little, WR
              Torrey Smith, WR
61 Jonas Fucking Mouton Justin Houston, DE
82 Vincent Brown Shereece Wright, CB
89 Shereece Wright Richard Sherman, CB

Hardly the 'mother lode' that could have been the 1983 Draft, but Sherman, Houston, and Little/Smith would have been huge upgrades to what we got instead, even if we had still taken Liuget and Wright.

According to some dick doing estimated historical QBR's , Marino put up the best seasons of the 83's and even Kosar had a better estimated QBR season than Horsehead ever did:

So this is either more fodder for QBR being shit, and/or Elway only ever did anything because he was good at riding coattails.

Really? I remember that draft and I think the consensus was he was going to be great. Naysayers notwithstanding he had a great career and was better than any QB we had during that period and was better than our combination of picks. How great would it have been to transition from Fouts to Elway?

Fuzzy memory here, but I think the Colts wanted all three #1s. Plus, Fouts was holding out prior to the draft and I believe Klein would have made that trade if the Fouts deal fell through.

But I agree, Marino was there for the taking, and I think he scored low on the wonderlick, plus the drug rumors, turned a lot of teams off.

                        Haha. Those rumors were true.
