2019 Post Wk 1 Power Rankings and Ratings

I'll post the summaries here sometime Wednesdays.

Blurbs for Power Rankings follow, and will be updated as soon as I see them. For those who don't know, "Rankings" are subjective, sometimes one person, and some by a panel. "Ratings" are those that use the results of the games to generate a rating.

    Frank Schwab - Yahoo Sports 7 (LW 7 )

Austin Ekeler's 154-yard game won't cause the Chargers to go back to the negotiating table with Melvin Gordon. Even if Gordon reports, Ekeler is going to have a role. He can play.

    Walter Football 10 (LW 11)

It's remarkable how great Philip Rivers was in the season opener, given how bad his offensive line is. Rivers, with the help of Keenan Allen and Austin Ekeler, survived against a great Indianapolis roster. They did so at home, to boot, where the fans in the stands typically don't root for them.

    Dan Hanzus - NFL.com 12 (LW 10)

Melvin Gordon's cosmically doomed holdout just encountered another setback. Austin Ekeler, who has replaced Gordon in the starting lineup, piled up 154 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Chargers began their season by knocking off the Andrew Luck-less Colts. Ekeler was part of a committee attack with Justin Jackson, who ran for 57 yards on just six carries. Philip Rivers showed no rust after a preseason spent entirely on the sideline, throwing for 333 yards and three touchdowns. The biggest concern for the Bolts after Week 1? Their run defense, which was a major issue in their playoff loss to the Patriots in January and a problem again against a Colts team that went over 200 yards on the ground.

Pete Prisco - CBS Sports 5 (LW 4)

Melvin Gordon who? Austin Ekeler was sensational against the Colts in the overtime victory. The defense needs to tighten up.

    Mike Florio - PFT/NBC Sports 10 (LW 10)

Another close game, another win for the Chargers.

Vinnie Iyer - Sporting News 9 (LW 7)

The Chargers pretty much confirmed they don't need Melvin Gordon to win big games, with Austin Ekeler taking it to the Colts through his game-winning touchdown in overtime. The defense will have some issues without Derwin James for a while, but Ekeler, Philip Rivers, Keenan Allen and Hunter Henry can keep masking them.

      Matt Verderame - Fansided.com 6 (LW n/a)

The run defense was hideous, but the rest of the team operated at a championship level.

      USA Today 6 (LW 2)

To recap -- RB Melvin Gordon isn't collecting a paycheck while looking utterly expendable during his holdout. This seems to be backfiring.

      ESPN 7 (LW 6)

Rookie who flashed: Drue Tranquill, LB

How the newcomer starred: The fourth-round selection didn't play a snap on defense. However, he played 16 snaps on special teams, finishing with a tackle and a partially blocked punt in his first NFL game. If he can continue to make plays on special teams, the Notre Dame product could earn some defensive snaps for the Chargers down the road. -- Eric D. Williams

      MMQB SI.COM 8 (LW 10)

Yes, Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson made up for Melvin Gordon's absence, but on the other side the Chargers gave up 174 yards on the ground to Marlon Mack. Concerning.

The Chargers got off to a hot start, seemingly able to move the ball at will against the Colts defense. Austin Ekeler and Keenan Allen quickly established themselves as the focal points of the offensive attack. The relative dominance lasted for about 2.5 quarters, as the Colts took advantage of miscues by the Chargers defense and special teams to rally back and tie the game with seconds to go. Overtime proved to be decisive for the Chargers, but this is a performance they'll need to learn from as they could have just as easily lost this one. The Chargers play their first road game next week in Detroit.

Bleacher Report Consensus 8 (LW 11)

If Melvin Gordon III was hoping the Los Angeles Chargers would realize how badly they needed him after Sunday's game with the Colts, that didn't quite work out as planned.

If the Chargers' overtime win was any indication, the Bolts will be just fine whether Gordon is in L.A. or not.

With Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson leading the charge in Gordon's absence, the Chargers piled up 125 yards on 21 carries. Ekeler also caught six passes for 96 yards and two scores, bringing his total stat line to 154 yards and three trips to the end zone.

The Chargers amassed 435 yards of total offense in the win, and the AFC West has the look of a two-horse race between a pair of talented teams.

The Chiefs are more explosive. The Chargers are better defensively. And just like in 2018, this could go down to the wire.

Did Walter say something about the Chargers that wasn't negative? It was a little back-handed, but I think he let something positive slip out.

                    Pro Football Focus ELO

                    6. Los Angeles Chargers

                    Week 1 Ranking: No. 8

The Chargers edged out a close overtime win against the Colts that didn't look too impressive, but our ELO rating still liked them because Indianapolis was supposed to be a strong team. The Chargers surely didn't miss Melvin Gordon, as Austin Ekeler broke 10 tackles on 19 touches -- an incredible rate. His 165 yards from scrimmage earned him an 82.7 overall grade, the fifth-best among all running backs this week.

                      Teddy Covers Covers.com 8 (LW 8)

Melvin Gordon's position in contract negotiations won't get easier after Austin Ekeler scored three TD's and Justin Jackson averaged 9.5 yards per carry in Week 1.
