DET Week 2 Defense: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

    Play #1 The Good:
Ignore the face mask at the end of the play. Focus on how many players shed blocks, recognize the run and direct the ball carrier to sideline.

    Play #2 The Bad
Desmond King has the blitz. He hesitates and allows Stafford time to throw it behind King to the open TE. Also notice Kyzir White bites on the play action

    Play #3 The Ugly
    Tackling.....wut

Good work again, Chili. Especially ugly is Davis whiffing here. In the slo-mo, it really shows how off-balance Davis is in his approach. A tiny little juke, and Davis looks like a Pop Warner kid getting faked out...

In the first clip notice how much quicker TD reacts and sprints out to stop the back. Then watch K. White. I don't know what we'd do now without TD.

Nice how quickly White got to the sideline.

          What I saw was......

TDavis is the playside LB and beats the block to make the tackle.
Kyzir is the off action LB flows quickly, defeats the OG block with speed & his hands, and is right there to clean up if necessary.

Both players are in new positions/schemes and are performing very well.
42 total tackles, 25 solo - combined through 2 games.
I expect them to keep improving, get disruptive in the passgame, shoot run fills as they get acclimated to their positions.

I read somewhere that Davis was in the same system at Carolina for 14 years and this is a new system to him, so maybe thats why he's hesitating as he is thinking too much instead of just playing.

              agree

our LB's will think less and react more, resulting in faster play and better defense.

Well if you're going to use more than 12 words, sure.

On the play number 2, why King did not raise his hands when Stafford has begun to pass ?
The chances of a deflected pass would have been high.

Sounds like Lynn wants Perryman to play much more in place of White. He doesn't think White is picking things up fast enough

All things considering, our defense did great last week despite the hole that the offense and ST put them in.

I didn't realize at the time that Davis was recruited to play a new scheme.
hindsight, but maybe that's not the smartest thing to ask of an especially old--I mean, veteran player.
                        G-Ro knows.
