2019 Post Wk 6 Power Rankings and Ratings

Will be trying something different... posting these on Wednesday, even though most of them come out on Tuesday. Let me know if you appreciate these, even with bad news!

    ---

Frank Schwab - Yahoo Sports 21 (LW 19)

Here’s the most disappointing team in the NFL. The Chargers faced undrafted Steelers rookie quarterback Devlin Hodges, who threw 92 of his 132 passing yards to running backs. The Steelers were entirely one-dimensional, which was predictable. And the Chargers got destroyed. I mostly liked Anthony Lynn through two seasons. But I hated the Chargers’ game plan in the playoffs against New England last season. And, even when considering some rough injuries, they are an absolute embarrassment this season.

The Chargers stink. Their only cover this year has been against the Dolphins, which doesn't count. Their only win besides that occurred because Adam Vinatieri couldn't kick his way out of a paper bag. They've been blown out in two home games against teams with a combined record of 4-8.

    Dan Hanzus - NFL.com 22 (LW 18)
After another hectic week in the NFL, Dan Hanzus updates his Power Rankings with a major shakeup in the top 10. How high do the 49ers and Texans fly? How low do the Chiefs and Cowboys go?

It wasn't a great Sunday night for the Chargers, who let the Steelers come into their building, play their music and walk out with a 24-17 win that wasn't nearly as close as the final score indicates. Slow starts are killing the Chargers right now. They've been outscored 38-0 in the first half of the last two games, and this team is simply not good enough to pull itself out of these big early deficits. The only good news? The division-leading Chiefs have also lost their past two games, a slump that's kept Kansas City from running away from everyone.

They have big-time injury issues that are crippling this team. But at some point, they have to play better through it all, starting this week at Tennessee.

    Mike Florio - PFT/NBC Sports 23 (LW 20)

It was embarrassing to have so many Steelers fans at a home game. And it will be even worse when that same ratio shows up at a much, much larger stadium.

    ----
Vinnie Iyer - Sporting News 24 (LW 20)

What was that? The Chargers were outcoached and looked unprepared for their "road home game" against the Steelers. Their woes on the offensive and defensive fronts are keeping them from matching their potential

This was supposed to be a Super Bowl contender. They’ll be lucky to reach the playoffs.

Poor Bolts, playing in front of sea of Steelers fans — at "home" — on Sunday night. Next game in L.A. is against Green Bay, so home-field disadvantage could actually grow.

As we rank all 32 teams through six weeks, we'll identify each squad's Achilles' heel. Some are obvious, while others are subtle.

      Biggest weakness: Turnovers

The Chargers have 11 giveaways this season, including five in the red zone and three within their opponent's 2-yard line. Slow starts also have been an issue of late, as the Chargers have been outscored a combined 38-0 in the first half the past two games. The Bolts are struggling to score points, but at the heart of this team's 2-4 record is its inability to protect the football. -- Eric D. Williams

Based on our Week 7 Power Poll voting, it’s very clear as to which teams are the best right now (New England, San Francisco, Green Bay) and who are the worst (Atlanta, Cincinnati, Washington, Miami). How do the rankings unfold for the other 25 teams?

The weight of circumstance may have finally broken the Chargers. Going down 21-0 before halftime and losing a “home” game to a 1-4 team on their third string QB in a soccer stadium full of Pittsburgh fans is just the latest entry in the misery diary. Next week’s game in Tennessee will send one of these reeling franchises off the rails.

Bleacher Report Consensus 25 (LW 19)

After losing two straight at home to teams that had combined for one win this season, the Los Angeles Chargers are officially in dumpster fire mode.

The problems are wide-ranging and varied. Philip Rivers topped 300 passing yards against the Steelers, but much of that came in garbage time, and he turned the ball over three times. The ground game was nonexistent against the Steelers, largely because of an injury-ravaged offensive line that featured five matador impersonators. The defense just allowed 17 points (one score was a defensive touchdown) to a third-string undrafted rookie quarterback best known for his duck-calling skills.

You cannot make this stuff up.

The Chargers look nothing like the playoff contender many made them out to be entering the season. They certainly don't look like the team that went 12-4 and won a playoff game in 2018.

With four of the team's next five games against clubs with a winning record, things are more than likely going to get worse.

Coming off of a lackluster performance against Denver, the Chargers responded by performing even worse against a Steelers team starting their third-string QB. For those of you who didn't see the game, don't be fooled by the score. Pittsburgh didn't look like world-beaters, but they deserved to win by much more than they did. This game also not only highlighted the attendance issue for Chargers home games, it may become the prime example. The near entirety of the stadium was pro-Steelers, and you could hear it from the broadcast.

The Buffalo Bills enter Week 7 as the top-ranked team in PFF's power rankings, which also assesses injury impact, fourth-down decision-making, strength of schedule and more.

Sunday should have been a relatively easy win for the Chargers, going up against the Steelers’ third-string quarterback, so the loss definitely dents their playoff chances somewhat. The return of tight end Hunter Henry provided a boost on offense however, with six of his eight receptions resulting in a first down or touchdown.

The Chargers are 8-1 against the spread in their last nine tries outside of LA, but at home in their soccer stadium they’ve lost their last three in straight up fashion, all as favorites.
