2019 Post Wk 8 Power Rankings and Ratings

Burbs and Rankings now, Ratings later...

Frank Schwab - Yahoo Sports 22 (LW 26)

For once, a close game went the Chargers’ way. That Tennessee loss in Week 7 is really hard now. They win that, they’re 4-4 and only a game behind the Chiefs in the AFC West.

Walter Cherepinsky - Walter Football 22 (LW 24)

Get ready for the parade in San Angeles because the Chargers finally covered the spread against a team not named the Dolphins! All it took was Mitchell Trubisky's horrible quarterbacking!

Oh, wait, never mind. I forgot for a second that the Chargers have no fans in their feces-infested dumpster of a city.

    ----
    Dan Hanzus - NFL.com 21 (LW 21)

Consider the shank by Bears kicker Eddy Pineiro a make-good from the Football Gods after that disastrous goal-line collapse against the Titans in Week 7. Much higher in the Power Rankings, we sang the praises of Niners super rookie Nick Bosa. Now it's time to give some love to his talented big brother. Joey Bosa is putting together another All-Pro-worthy season for the Chargers. On Sunday, he finished with seven combined tackles -- four of those for a loss -- two sacks and three QB hits. He had two sacks against the Titans, as well, and is on pace to set career highs across the board. They needed Peak Bosa on Sunday. It was another quiet day for the Chargers' offense, who won despite gaining just 231 yards. On Monday night, the unit's struggles cost Ken Whisenhunt his job.

That close victory against the Bears might have saved their season. Maybe it's a sign that those types of things will now go their way.

“Hey, guys! Let’s go out and celebrate our big win! . . . Right after I fire the offensive coordinator.”

    ----
Vinnie Iyer - Sporting News 23 (LW 26)

The Chargers got lucky for a change to balance out all their bad mojo. They don't look close to the playoff team they were last year, with all their defensive injuries and offensive limitations tied to shoddy line play.

Rudy is the only movie that makes him cry.

The Chargers lost in spirit against Chicago, but found a win against a total mess.

When you can't crack 40 rushing yards four weeks in a row — and lose three times in that span — someone's gotta pay. Sorry, Coach Whiz.

      ESPN 23 (LW 24)
Some are stars off to slow starts. Others are young players who need to take their game to the next level. Either way, these guys need to improve.

Player who needs to step up: Melvin Gordon, RB

The Wisconsin product is off to a slow start since his return from a holdout, totaling 112 rushing yards (2.5 per carry) in four games. The Chargers are 1-3 in those contests. Head coach Anthony Lynn wants to create balance for an offense that's averaging just 19.6 points a game. That means Gordon and the offensive line have to get on the same page, generating more explosive runs and taking pressure off Philip Rivers to carry the offense with the passing game. -- Eric D. Williams

While teams in the top 10 of the power rankings remain consistent, there's some movement at the bottom—notably, a rise from the Chargers and a new No. 31!

Given the Chargers’ recent run of bad luck, they deserved a wink from above. Solid games from Rivers, Bosa and Mike Williams, but opportunities to build on this win seem scarce against Green Bay.

      Reddit NFLPowerRankers 22 (LW 25)

The biggest positive outside of winning was the healthy return of star tackle Russell Okung. Besides those things, the Chargers did not look the part of a contending team on the rebound. The offense still didn't look ready for the most part, and it ended up costing OC Ken Whisenhunt his job. The defense had a much better outing against a struggling Bears offense, and Joey Bosa had the best game of his season so far. At 3-5, the season is not entirely lost but it will take significant improvement for the Chargers to really put themselves back in playoff

The 2019 NFL season is just about halfway over, and there's been no shortage of star turns, disappointments and surprises. Two teams have yet to lose a game. That one is the New England Patriots is not a surprise...

The good thing about the Los Angeles Chargers' one-point win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday is that it finally and mercifully put an end to the Bolts' three-game skid and stretch of five defeats in six games.

That's just about the only good thing that can be said about it.

The Chargers probably should have lost. The team managed just 231 yards of total offense. The run game was MIA yet again, picking up all of 36 yards. The Chargers were a miserable 2-of-10 on third down.

Had Chicago kicker Eddy Pineiro not missed a 41-yard field goal as time expired, we'd be talking about another close loss and miserable performance from a team that was seen as the biggest threat to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West.

The Chargers got the win in Week 8, but they aren't going anywhere except downtown mediocrity.

When a head coach on the hot seat (Anthony Lynn) fires his offensive coordinator midseason (Ken Whisenhunt), it’s rarely a good sign moving forward.

The Chargers came very close to losing their fourth game on the bounce in Week 8 on the road to the Bisky-led Bears, but quarterback Philip Rivers ultimately did enough to keep from that fate. Through eight weeks, Rivers ranks 10th among signal-callers in overall grade and 15th in passer rating from a clean pocket, and he’ll continue to keep this team in reach as long as he’s playing up to scratch.
