When Bird played, I thought he did reasonably well last year. I really thought he was terrible as a rookie, but he played well in preseason last year, and when he got to play in the Panthers and Oakland games late, he got a fair number of tackles. He gets good depth on his drops. He can run a bit and is a decent tackler. He also doesn't get fooled like he used to.

I'm not saying I want him as a starter, but I think he is developing into a decent backup. He will never be that inside plugger, downhill type of LB who destroys RB in the backfield, but can play side to side and get outside against sweeps and tosses. I also like the fact that he is tall for an ILB, so in a pinch he gives us some additional height in pass coverage. He is pretty good on ST, which is a necessary quality of any backup.

The personal fouls can probably be written off as being a stupid rookie, since he hasn't committed one since he was a rookie.

Bird probably comes out of camp as the 3rd ILB, at least for 1st and 2nd downs. But I'm don't think there are many snaps available there.
