2019 Post Wk 12 Power Rankings and Ratings

Most of these dropped after the bye week...

Frank Schwab - Yahoo Sports 21 (LW 20)

All-Pro safety Derwin James was activated off injured reserve and seems likely to play this week. Hopefully he’s 100 percent, and no less than that, because this is a lost season for the Chargers and James is too good to rush back.

Walter Cherepinsky - Walter Football 22 (LW 23)

I think Tua Tagovailoa is a logical fit for the Chargers, so I mocked him to them in the 2020 NFL Mock Draft. Tagovailoa won't be ready until 2021, so it would make sense for him to sit behind Philip Rivers for a year and learn from a future Hall of Famer.

    ----
    Dan Hanzus - NFL.com 19 (LW 19)

The hard truth: If the Chargers wanted a realistic chance of playing football in January, they had to find a way to beat either the Raiders or Chiefs in their past two games. They lost both and now stand in the position of having to win out to even have a chance. Putting together a winning streak like that would take the kind of consistency we simply haven't seen from the Bolts since last year. That said, the Philip Rivers career obituaries felt premature after last Monday night's four-interception nightmare. Rivers has undeniably taken a step back this season -- only Jameis Winston (24) and Daniel Jones (18) have more giveaways than Rivers (16) this season -- but he's also the type of player who can go off on a hot streak at any moment. The Chargers might not make the playoffs, but they could be a deadly spoiler down the stretch.

They come off the bye barely alive in the playoff hunt and with talk of Philip Rivers maybe in his final year with the team. That can't be fun to hear.

By beating Lamar Jackson in the 2018 playoffs, the Chargers finally have something they can hold over the Rams.

Vinnie Iyer - Sporting News 24 (LW 22)

The Chargers had a bye to shake off all those Philip Rivers interceptions and refocus on winning out. They have two games they should win back-to-back right away against the Broncos and Jaguars, but then it gets much harder with the Vikings, Raiders and Chiefs.

The Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders move back in our NFL power rankings, while the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans move up.

The Chargers are playing out the most depressing string in the league.

Philip Rivers has now been on losing end of 61 games decided by seven or fewer points, most by any starting quarterback in Super Bowl era.

      ESPN 20 (LW 19)
Some NFL teams cherish their MVP-caliber quarterbacks, while others are grateful for elite defensive players or future draft picks.

What they're thankful for: S Derwin James.

Losers of two straight and sitting at 4-7, the Chargers can be thankful for the eventual return of one of the team's top playmakers. On injured reserve since the start of the season after having surgery to repair a stress fracture in his right foot, James has been working on the side for the past few weeks and could be back on the field as early as Sunday against the Broncos. "There's a chance," Anthony Lynn said. "I'm not going to say he'll be back, because I don't like to put a timetable on it. But there's a chance." -- Eric D. Williams

Also, Bills finally crack the top 10, Ryan Tannehill keeps the Titans moving up and NFC East teams continue to slide as the division remains wide open.

Whether he likes it or not, these next five games are an audition of sorts for Philip Rivers. He’s been stamped as washed; now what can he do down the stretch? The Broncos should help him start on the right foot…or keep the spiral swirling.

The bye week brought about a lot of positive news to the Chargers. The Broncos and Raiders both lost and the team is getting healthier, with Derwin James being activated from IR. Playoff aspirations are still on life support but the Chargers can make some ground in that race against a Denver squad that has struggled even worse than the Chargers have offensively. The road to salvaging the season, playoffs or not, begins in the Mile High City.

We may be nearing the end of an era for the Chargers.

The Bolts entered the 2019 season with lofty expectations after going 12-4 and winning a playoff game last year. The team hasn't come close to fulfilling those expectations, losing seven games in just about every soul-crushing way imaginable. All seven losses have been in one-score games.

One of the biggest reasons for all those close losses is the inescapable and depressing reality that in the last year of his contract, quarterback Philip Rivers hasn't played very well.

Rivers has already thrown more interceptions in 11 games (14) than in either of the last two seasons. His passer rating of 85.5 is his lowest in well over a decade. As Rivers comes off a four-interception effort against the Kansas City Chiefs in Mexico City, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports there's a real chance his 16th season with the Chargers will be his last:

"There have been no inroads toward a contract extension, sources said, and none planned. Rivers is a potential future Hall of Famer, and one of the most impactful players in franchise history, but his relationship with some in the organization has frayed a bit in recent years. It is far from a foregone conclusion that he is back in 2020, and ownership may be inclined to go in a different direction, the sources said."

That's the kind of year it's been for the Chargers.

The Chargers defense hasn’t created many takeaways; notching only eight interceptions and five fumble recoveries in their first eleven ballgames.
