2019 Post Wk 13 Power Rankings and Ratings

There is a theme here... Charger-ing. Sorry about the tardiness, still have some still pending..

That was an incredible way to lose a game, even for the Chargers. What’s forgotten is Mike Williams’ unbelievable catch on fourth-and-11 that set up the game-tying field goal. Williams doesn’t have the consistent impact throughout games you’d like to see, but he makes highlight catches that remind you how good he is. He’s averaging a league-leading 20.5 yards per catch this season but has no touchdowns, which is a remarkable combination.

The Chargers usually beat themselves, but the officials were to blame this week, as the refs called them for two phantom calls in the final minutes, including an inexplicable pass interference on Casey Hayward, where Hayward was flagged despite looking back for the ball on a pass that had absolutely no chance. The head official might as well have announced, "Penalty on the Chargers, because we need the Broncos to cover the spread. The game is over."

It feels like we never go more than a few weeks without watching L.A.'s other team suffer a loss in excruciating fashion. "It seems like we're literally trying to figure out every way you can possibly lose a game," running back Austin Ekeler said after Sunday's last-second loss to the Broncos. "It's just frustrating, for sure." The Chargers are now 4-8, dead and buried in the AFC. All eight of those losses have come by seven points or fewer. It's been a what-if season for the NFL's preeminent what-if franchise. Against the Broncos, the Chargers found a way to lose a game in regulation in which they kicked a game-tying field goal with 14 seconds to play. Cornerback Casey Hayward Jr. was called for defensive pass interference on a deep ball that set up Brandon McManus' 53-yard game-winner at the gun. Chargers gonna Charger.

They just can't win any close games, and as a result the playoffs are long gone. This team seems jinxed at times.

If the goal was to lose a game in every way possible, congratulations.

The Chargers were starting to think about a QB change from Philip Rivers, but the bottom line is they tend to make little mistakes that take away from their big-play capacity. The 180 from their 2018 playoff team is shocking.

The Tennessee Titans are making a strong playoff push behind Ryan Tannehill, while the New England Patriots are searching for their offense.

The Chargers invent ways to lose.

Despite being 4-8, they've outscored opposition by three collective points this season. That's what happens when every loss for a loaded roster is gut-wrenching.

These players, coaches and executives won't be playing out the string, as the final month of the season could make or break their futures.

Who's under fire: Philip Rivers, QB

In the final year of his contract and set to turn 38 on Sunday, Rivers has had one of his worst seasons as a pro. His 15 interceptions are second in the NFL, and for the first time in his pro career, he's thrown eight interceptions over a three-game stretch -- the past three games. Rivers would like to play in 2020 and remain in a Chargers uniform. However, with the Bolts 4-8 and looking to build fan support moving into SoFi Stadium next year, ownership has some tough decisions to make. Whether Rivers stays or goes will be at the top of the list. -- Eric D. Williams

Five straight wins is good enough to put the Seahawks in the No. 3 spot. Also, Tannehill and the Titans continue to surge and the NFC East sinks to new lows, with no top-10 votes and the Giants in the bottom spot.

Some might wonder why every single one of the Chargers’ losses this season have been by one score or less. Then you watch this play, a play with precisely one objective–draw a pass interference flag. It was a good throw, sure, but Casey Hayward Jr. didn’t even consider locating the ball before making contact with Courtland Sutton. Flag, spot foul, first down, field goal, game over. All in under nine seconds.

Mike Williams made a statement catch, Perryman nabbed an INT, and the RB duo of Gordon and Ekeler did a good job moving the ball, but as a team, the Chargers looked lost once again. The offense struggled to move the ball consistently and gave up 3 sacks to a Broncos defense without Von Miller. The special teams were special again. Casey Hayward had a tough game even before the PI blunder, but it shouldn't have come to that. The Chargers were healthy and dealing with an opposition starting their third QB this season, but they still found a way to lose. Of course they did.

        This is getting ridiculous.

In 2019, the Los Angeles Chargers have become the masters of finding new and inventive ways to lose. All eight of the team’s losses have been by one score. Of late, the biggest culprit had been turnovers by quarterback Philip Rivers. The veteran had struggled so badly that there were reports before Sunday’s game that the Chargers were considering benching him.

Well, Rivers played well enough to get the win Sunday, leading the team back from a 14-0 deficit. But Casey Hayward inexplicably drew a pass interference penalty with just seconds left on the clock that set up Denver’s Brandon McManus for the game-winning kick.

It was just the latest misery in a season filled with them. A Chargers team that entered 2019 a Super Bowl contender in the eyes of some now occupies last place in the division.

And with Rivers in the final year of his contract and head coach Anthony Lynn’s future with the team unclear, the Chargers could be a drastically different team when they move into their new stadium in 2020.

All eight of the Chargers losses this season have come by a touchdown or less; each and every one a ‘winnable’ game

PFF NFL Power Rankings ELO 19 (LW 19)
With Week 13 of the 2019 season in the books, PFF releases its NFL Power Rankings ahead of Week 14.

The Chargers once again found themselves on the receiving end of a heartbreaking and improbable loss, this time at the hands of the Broncos, who drew a long pass interference penalty in the waning seconds to place them within game-winning field goal range. After starting the game slowly—and after watching Tyrod Taylor warming up on the sideline—Philip Rivers perked up a bit as the game went on, and he ended the contest with a 73.2 overall grade — a much-needed improvement after ending Week 10 and 11 with grades of 43.8 and 47.6, respectively. While Rivers is not quite living up to his 2018 standard, he's still ranked 11th among quarterbacks in big-time throw percentage, but there have been far too many careless decisions. In fact, Rivers has the fifth-highest percentage of turnover-worthy plays (4.9%) entering Week 14. There may be a decline in “zip” from his early years, but this isn’t an unfamiliar story in Rivers’ career, and it’s too early to write him off as “washed up.”
