2019 Post Wk 14 Power Rankings and Ratings

The weekly rundown. It's surprising how the statistical ratings hopped with the big win last Sunday

Austin Ekeler is on pace for 1,000 receiving yards. He has been a heck of a revelation for the Chargers, and he probably should have been playing way more snaps than Melvin Gordon even after Gordon’s holdout ended.

The Chargers apparently didn't seem to realize that their loss to the Broncos effectively eliminated them from the playoffs. They tried hard at Jacksonville and came away with an easy victory despite having no motivation to achieve one. In fact, they hurt themselves in the process by worsening their draft positioning. So, even though they won, they really lost. Classic Chargers.

Dan Hanzus updates his Power Rankings in the wake of a rocky Week 14, with the defending champion Patriots falling out of the top five for the first time this season.

In a rough season for the Chargers and the greatest quarterback in their history, Sunday served as an exhale. Philip Rivers celebrated his 38th birthday with 314 passing yards and three touchdowns in a 45-10 win over the Jaguars. Who cares if the Bolts were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday? The Chargers have all offseason to try and figure out how to fix this team. For now, this is the time to appreciate Rivers, who might be playing his final games as a Charger. Whomever is behind center next year will be lucky to have Austin Ekeler on his side. The versatile running back became the first player in the NFL this season to finish a game with 100 yards rushing and receiving. Most of that receiving damage came on an 84-yard touchdown reception off a bubble screen. The man is instant offense.

That team we saw in Jacksonville was the team many expected to see this season. Where has that been?

Maybe Austin Ekeler will be the guy holding out next year.

The Chargers finally clicked on all cylinders, but their blowout win in Jacksonville came too late for a playoff return. Anthony Lynn should be safe as coach to see them through to his fourth year.

Los Angeles finally won a game without needing to put its fans through the seven stages.

All Philip Rivers had to do was turn 38 in order to post highest single-game passer rating (154.4) of his 16-year career.

      Offense: 10th
      Defense: 16th
      Special teams: 32nd

According to FPI, the Chargers have the worst special teams in the league. And in a season during which the Bolts have lost all eight games by seven points or fewer, special teams has had its share of hiccups. The Chargers have five fumbles on punt returns, tied for second worst in the NFL, losing two of those. L.A.'s 75% field goal percentage is tied for No. 22 in the league. Most of those misses occurred when starter Michael Badgley was out nursing a groin injury. However, the Chargers are tied for the league lead in the NFL with four missed field goals in the fourth quarter. -- Eric D. Williams

Three straight wins for the Chiefs and a divisional win for the Rams is good enough for both teams to rise in this week's power rankings.

Philip Rivers and the Bolts hung 31 unanswered on the Jags to snap their recent three-game skid. Rivers kept it tidy (16-of-22, 314 yards, 3 TDs, 154.4 rating) and let Austin Ekeler (101 rushing yards, 112 passing, TD) gash up the Jacksonville defense, most notably on this 84-yard catch-and-run.

On one hand, this was a very solid performance by the Chargers. Rivers had time and was able to get the ball to his targets. Austin Ekeler ran and caught his way into the Chargers record books and many touchdowns were had... for the Chargers this time! Fingers crossed that they can carry this performance up to Minnesota next week. On the other hand, playoffs!?

We're in the thick of it now. Week 14 in the NFL brought with it the first game of the final month of the 2019 regular season—and three games featuring a pair of teams who would be in the playoffs if the season ended today...

There hasn't been much for the Los Angeles Chargers to cheer about in 2019. The Bolts came into the 2019 season with aspirations of winning the AFC West and making a deep postseason run after winning 12 games last year. They'll leave the season with at best a .500 record and hard questions to answer—including whether to close the door on the Philip Rivers era.

Rivers made a case for one more year on Sunday against the reeling Jaguars with his best performance in a long time—314 yards, three scores, just six incompletions and a passer rating of 154.4.

The question for Justin Sayles of The Ringer is whether that's enough.

"Rivers doesn't look like the quarterback he once was," Sayles said. "His QBR has fallen from 67.8 in 2018 to 48.0 entering Sunday's matchup with Jaguars (which admittedly was Rivers's best of the season). Scouts and evaluators have noted a steep drop in his performance, particularly on deep passes. After a seven-INT stretch in Weeks 10 and 11, the team briefly flirted with benching him in favor of backup Tyrod Taylor. Rivers is currently wrapping up his 16th season in the NFL, he turned 38 on Sunday, and he'll be a free agent this spring. As the Chargers get set to open their new home next season—one they'll have difficulty filling—Rivers's future looks as questionable as those of his fellow 2004 first-round quarterbacks, Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger."

It's a question that will dog the Chargers right up until the team answers it—one way or the other.

Austin Ekeler became the first player in the NFL with at least 100 rushing and 100 receiving yards in the same game this season. No wonder they wouldn’t pay Melvin Gordon!
