2019 Post Wk 15 Power Rankings and Ratings

I thought it would be worse...

Frank Schwab - Yahoo Sports 23 (LW 22)

The Chargers have mostly been competitive and adept at losing in insane ways. Sunday was just bad. They were sloppy with the ball and got blown out at home by the Vikings. That’s the first time you watched the Chargers and wondered if it’s time to make some significant changes.

Do you know how frustrating it is to spend hours upon hours trying to handicap a game, only to see the players on the team you pick fumble five f**king times? Seriously, if news breaks in a decade that Melvin Gordon bet against his own team in a battle against the Vikings in 2019, I won't be surprised in the slightest.

A grotesque Sunday for the Chargers, who turned it over seven times in a 39-10 loss to the Vikings at Dignity Health Sports Park -- overrun, as usual, by fans of the visiting team. Let's go ahead and count those turnovers, shall we? Two fumbles by Melvin Gordon, a fumble by tight end Hunter Henry and a fumble and three interceptions by Philip Rivers, who's up to 18 picks on the season. Getting slaughtered in the turnover battle is a big reason why the Chargers are limping to the finish line with a losing record. Speaking of Rivers, performances like these will only build speculation about his future in Los Angeles. Anthony Lynn is likely safe on the strength of last year's 12-4 finish, but could the coach make an internal push for a younger option under center in 2020? There should be no shortage of potential replacements on the market this offseason.

Is this the end for Philip Rivers? This team has been a major flop this season.

At least they didn’t blow another close game.

The Chargers went from blowing out the Jaguars on the road to being routed by the Vikings at home. That’s their typical roller-coaster of a season in a nutshell. Anthony Lynn should survive as coach, but they will have a tough call to make on Philip Rivers, who has become a turnover machine.

The Houston Texans earned the biggest win of Week 15, while the Los Angeles Rams effectively saw their playoff dreams end.

Philip Rivers can’t stop turning the ball over.

It's pretty hard to turn the ball over seven times. But the Bolts' ability to underachieve rarely fails to amaze.

After a woeful seven turnover effort in their home loss to Minnesota, the Chargers now have 29 giveaways for the season – only the Giants and Bucs are worse. (1.5)

Offseason in two words: Quarterback uncertainty

Heading into the offseason after head coach Anthony Lynn's first losing record, the Chargers have major questions to answer at quarterback for the first time in more than a decade. Philip Rivers, 38, had an up-and-down season, and he is in the final year of his contract. Rivers would like to return in 2020, but does the front office want him back? Or are the Chargers ready to move on and either select a quarterback early in the draft or sign someone else in free agency? What happens at quarterback will be the top storyline for the Chargers this offseason. -- Eric D. Williams

Also, Patriots fall to lowest spot this season, Rams slip after loss to Cowboys, Buccaneers climb into the top half (which means what for Jameis Winston’s future?) and Falcons are surging at the wrong time this season.

Disgusting brand of football put forth by the Chargers on Sunday in a game where they matched their opponents in total yards but lost by 29 points. The culprit? Seven turnovers, including six total from Phillip Rivers (three INTs, fumble) and Melvin Gordon (two fumbles), that led to 20 Minnesota points.

It doesn't matter how good of a team you are on paper or how strong your defense is, if you turn the ball over seven times, you're going to lose. This Chargers offense continued their hopeless and disgusting downward trend towards irrelevancy. The offensive coaching staff should seriously be evaluated because the offense should not be playing this badly, ever. Not much else can be said, really. On a more positive note, Philip Rivers surpassed 4000 passing yards in a season for the 11th time in his career.

The NFL playoff picture is coming into focus. OK, it is coming into focus in some places. In others, things are more confusing than ever...

For most of the 2019 campaign, the Los Angeles Chargers have been the masters of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. All eight of their losses entering Week 15 had been by single digits.

Against the Minnesota Vikings, that was not the case. The Chargers played their worst game of the season, committing seven turnovers in a rout that ensures they will finish with a losing record after winning 12 games a year ago.

Per ESPN's Eric Williams, head coach Anthony Lynn was blunt in his assessment of the team's performance.

"Seven turnovers," Lynn said. "We got our asses kicked in all three phases. Any questions?"

The question now becomes: What will the Chargers do next? Lynn's future appears to be uncertain. The contract of quarterback Philip Rivers, 38, expires after the season.

Will L.A. try one more run with the current regime or hit the reset button after a disappointing year?

That question looms large as the team prepares to move into its new stadium in 2020.
