Ranked #2 in D on points and 5 in yards. 3rd in turnovers, 7th vs the pass, 8th against the run. That '79 team shoulda won the Super Bowl. The biggest flaw in that team was the lack of running game. We were 25th running and #1 in passing. And lost to the fucking Oilers without Earl Campbell, Ken Burrough and Dan Pastorini. We lost to a team with Gifford Neilsen at QB.
The Chargers blasted both Super Bowl participants in the regular season too. Yup, 1979 was the year.

The defense is progressing nicely. We did blow a lead in the first game against the cards (certainly not all on the D) but we did have the defense stop comeback attempts by the other team two weeks in a row.

I can't say enough of the defensive game strategy of forcing ej to sit in the pocket and make his throws. On numerous occasions I saw two spy linebackers hovering waiting for Ej to leave the pocket.
Its been years since we could sit back and let the defense take over the game.
When has the chargers ever had a top ten offense, defense and coaching staff?
Chargers had a top 10 defense when they went 1-15 the sole year Ryan Leaf was the starter.
Like I said, I enjoyed the win, but I'm not exactly making Super Bowl plans off of it.
Keep in mind this same defense two weeks ago made Carson Palmer look like Johnny Unitas in the final minutes of the game, so they still have some work to do. I do however have confidence things will get much, much better by season's end. The talent is there, assembly is still a work in progress.sigpic

Keep in mind that it was our first time in the playoffs in a decade. Very, very disappointing, but hardly fireable. Coryell was the guy that got us over the hump to begin with. Gene Klein inexplicably let a great team erode. For Stinky-Jon-Wizzleteats....
