I did also Ben but I wasn't much on Eli. Thought he was QB 3 in that draft.
    Very close to my thoughts.
Rivers had experience and a high completion percentage to go with his great leadership.
    Then things happened.
    A holdout.
    Brees surprising performance.
    We play modern Harball.

I tend to think of successful quarterbacking in that era as favoring football IQ over athleticism, very generally and in comparison to today's NFL.
imho River is cut from the same cloth as Peyton Manning and despite Brady's success, PM was the best QB in that era.
Like Jolt says, Herbo may prove to be at that level at some point, but for that time period, understanding of a variety of defenses, and elite leadership was key, thats Rivers all day.

If I had to pick a QB for this era, an era where defenses lines have such an advantage of offensive lines, I pick Herbo hands down.

It wasn't all of his fault that the team didn't win a Super Bowl, but he threw way too interceptions--particularly in the 1979 playoff loss to Houston (five interceptions) and the 1982 playoff loss to Miami (five interceptions again). He also didn't perform up to way he should have against Oakland in the 1980 AFC Championship Game. I would take Rivers and Herbert over Fouts, without question.
At least there’s no argument those were the Chargers greatest coaches of all time.

As far as comparing QB’s, rules are too different, and players surrounding the QB matter so much. Fouts, Rivers, Brees, and Herbert are all good enough to win SB’s. I don’t get the dick measuring.

That is true, regarding Fouts playing in the toughest era. I think Rivers and Herbert could have played very well in the Coryell era, though, and done better than Fouts.

As far as the "dick measuring" goes, it's most likely to transpire when a franchise has this many great quarterbacks. I'm sure Packers and 49ers fans do so, too, although I admit they probably are more respectful than some here are of Fouts and Rivers. Perhaps 49ers fans would be more critical of Young if he never had that 1994 season and finished his career with only the playoff disappointments against Dallas and Green Bay. I didn't start the conversation, so I'm just answering questions. I think Rivers was better than Fouts

To the question of who I want as my quarterback if Brees, Fouts, Herbert, and Rivers are all available in a draft: as of right now, it would be Rivers.

I just found it interesting. I didn't mean it as an insult. I just recall you being one of the more objective posters when critiquing Herbert's performances last season.

Myself, I'm not a fan of what the quarterback position has become in the NFL over the last 20 years. They're coddled way too much and receive way more credit than they deserve, and then the excuses pile on when they don't succeed. Then there are those, like Rivers and Herbert, who receive too much criticism when the teams around them didn't/don't provide much help. I prefer the way the game was played and analyzed before the Brady/Manning era, but I realize it will never go back to that.

No worries and I didn't take it that way. I view this as a pivotal season for Herbert. I think he needs to take the next step mentally. I'm hoping the new brain trust at the top can get everything out of him.

true, i love all of these guys, no need to compare them. Fouts / Coryell was childhood team - i might create a powder blue "Fouts 14" jersey and just wear that one for good. I could listen Rivers talk about football all day long - I hope he does something with the NFL (coaching, broadcasting, etc.) once his kids grow up.

I'll ride with Herbie to the gates of hell. The smartest, most athletic, most talented, and best looking QB in Chargers History!

(and the ONLY Charger QB with a chance to ever win a SB )

If a QB has a pulse and 10 guys suited up on the field, there's no excuse for not winning. Or so some say.

I get a little annoyed with the "excuse" label from fans. Things happen that legitimately affect the probability of winning
