Didn't we trade up to #2 to get Ryan Leaf. (Well, whichever QB fell to us, which was likely to be, and was, Ryan Leaf)

“Desperate for a starting quarterback, the Chargers made a blockbuster deal with Arizona yesterday to move from the third pick in the draft to the second, behind Indianapolis.

The Cardinals got San Diego's first- and second-round picks this year, its first-round pick in 1999, kick-returner Eric Metcalf and linebacker Patrick Sapp.”

That just reminds me that tomtelesco is so much better at trading up than aj smith
aj smith was really bad trading up giving up so many picks

telesco moved up from the 2nd to the 1st round and just gave up a 3rd this year and aj smith moved up en in the 2nd round for weddle and gave up much much more

The worst was Bobby Beathard's habit of trading away the next year's first rounder to move up in the second. I am sure it only happened once or twice but damn if it did not feel like we went years without a first round pick in the late nineties.

Really not a bad history at all. The first three were solid moves - all three team hall of famers and one Pro Football HOF inductee. The final two were pretty good talent that did good things for the team during their moments, even though they didn't completely fulfill their promise.

I never knew this detail. Having a 1st round pick in 99 could have done wonders. Although the 99 QB class wasn't that impressive.

we did not trade up to take byrd..... we traded to acquire 2 of the 3 1983 first round picks to try to trade for Elway......and colts gave Elway to donkeys for less than what chargers offered....

after failing in that, we stupidly took Byrd(who was a good but not great CB) and Anderson over taking Marino who was basically a younger, stronger Fouts clone...... even a worse mistake than taking Leaf......

                        O'neal fell
to Chargers because "someone(in chargers org)" falsely started a "rumor" that O'neal's knee was still injured.......

RM was a terrible pick in a weak RB draft.........

And like someone said we actually traded up for whichever QB fell to us, but we knew it would be Leaf.....
