I have extended family affected in Altadena (Brother-in-law's Mom), they are safe, but my sister is pretty shook up. They don't know if the house is still there. Unfortunately, there might be no help from insurance. Any clues on how to advise my sister would help.

I learned the reason Insurance companies stopped offering home owners in CA is because lawmakers tried to cap the insurance rates and when your not allowed to charge the premium necessary to pay claims, they had no choice but to pull out and or cancel. This should be fertile grounds for civil suits I believe.

No matter what, it's going to be a difficult rebuild, if the house is lost. I'm sure that story will be repeated a lot, but with outright refusal of insurance companies to insure or just pulling out of California.

I live in an unincorporated area around Temecula and all insurance companies dropped out several years ago so the only solution is California Fair Plan for fire insurance and they charge exorbitant rates. Then you have to get an additional wrap around policy for everything besides a fire. My wraparound is as expensive as what my entire policy used to be.
The Altadena fire is a disaster. My son in law and his family live close by in Pasadena and had to evacuate on Tuesday. They still can’t go back due to the ash in the air but their house is okay.
I hope there’s some help for your family.

All good here. I live in one of the few areas of LA that is apparently undesirable from a fire perspective.
one of my kids had to evacuate last night with the Sunset fire but they lifted that and his place is fine.
devastation all around.
