Chargers not trading up for Jeanty isn't about the player Jeanty is - its about the cost to get him and the needs on the roster. Especially in a RB deep class
You take Jeanty and a bunch of 6th rounders
I will fill three needs -- one of which is a solid RB
It would therefore make sense to pick up a RB in this draft to fill the #2 rb role, as opposed to going all in for Jeanty.

Almost no one is with 2 1st round players unless they are a QB.
What are the odds that Jeanty turns out to be the best RB in the draft? 50% maybe. What are the odds he's better than Hampton? What are the odds he's better then Hampton and whoever is the Chargers 1st next year?

To me if we are going to trade up, an he were to fall to pick 13 or 15 which he probably won't, Id much rather look at Tyler Warren because he COULD be a TE that could translate to a bonafide weapon that Herbert's needed his whole career...
Otherwise just let the draft play out and see who falls to us.

No guarantees Jeanty turns into a generational RB. Now, the Falcons did do a similar move for Julio Jones and it worked. He was a good player - even got to ta Super Bowl
But I think at this point ,the best player on your offense is still Justin Herbert
Build up around him at more than one RB
That is a lot of draft capital you are giving up

The same could be said are the Chargers an extra first round pick and mid to late round pick away from competing for a superbowl. They could be, but maybe not.
Look at how the Rams gutted their picks and still competed for a Superbowl, and came very close every season.

And if Mr Rook is no good at all, Herbie has another long 17 games of fuck me until Joe gets to try again. Is it worth $6M to ensure Justin doesn’t suffer another 17 game fuck over? Has he suffered enough of those with shit OCs yet? Clary, Boze, … ffs, amiright?
I don’t know how this McGovern sub-thread got started, but any OC draft pick taken Rd3 or later is an IF proposition. McGov seems to be another fanciful thread filler exercise absent any facts to me - one of many as we await to learn what really will happen. Thats cool, it’s fun. This guy ain’t no pro bowler, but any OC with a proven NFL PFF grade of 70 goes to the top of the Charger depth chart the day they issue him a locker and pads.
one thing is - watching real football every weekend every year - NO TEAM gets all of their rookies to play and contribute. No GM hits on every pick. None. Which ones will and which ones won’t is always the question.
I went through this same exercise a few years back... when we had a black hole at center.
That's when I noticed that the Packers had a cap problem... same as the Bills now.
That's when I noticed/predicted that Corey Linsley might be cut in a cap-saving move. It was just a fanciful thread filler at the time...
Facts:
1. Bozeman and James are "IF" propositions @center.
2. The Bills have a cap-space problem. The problem goes away if they cut James Cook or trade Connor McGovern.
3. Connor McGovern's contract has been restructured in such a way (voided years) that it makes sense to trade him now.
4. The Bills drafted a young/promising center last draft (Sedrick Van-Pran).
5. The Chargers have had official visits (Ezeiruaku and Mason Taylor) that are now being projected as late 1st/early 2nd round prospects.

WRS were better
Dline was better
The two teams were not at the same spot
Now, I understand risk and reward. I just don't see it for RB
In a year, maybe they will be better position. I still want this year to be about building a solid foundation. Hence, why, all things equal, in the trade down in Round 1 to get another Day 2 or a 4t
and try to use your 6ths to move up in Round 5
Right now 5 picks in the first 5 rounds - I want Hortiz to have EIGHT picks by the end of Round 5

You probably need to throw in Marvin Gardens too.
A TE @#55 and a RB @#86 (along with edge rusher @#22) may allow you to build hotels all along the western coastline.

Whatever the 49ers do, they should not draft him with the 11th pick.
Early in the offseason, Graham was considered a lock to get drafted in the top five. But the Combine revealed that he's relatively small for a defensive tackle (6'3", 296 lbs.) and his arms are extremely short (32 inches). And in three seasons at Michigan, he recorded just 9 sacks.
Yikes.
Compare Graham to Solomon Thomas, whom the 49ers took with the third pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Thomas is 6'3", 295 lbs. and his arms are 33 inches long. And he had 11.5 sacks in two seasons at Stanford. And he was extremely athletic at the Combine. And yet, he lacks the size and length to be an effective starter at defensive tackle in the NFL. So he's a backup.
I'm not saying Graham definitely will be a bust and a long-term backup like Thomas. I'm just saying the 49ers probably shouldn't draft a Solomon Thomas doppelganger in Round 1. Let some other team take a chance on a sub-300-pound defensive tackle with 32-inch arms and minimal sack production.
Graham didn't even do any of the athletic testing at the Combine. And at his Pro Day he did position drills only. Sounds like a player who could drop into the late first round.
If the 49ers take a defensive tackle in Round 1, they'd be better off taking Kenneth Grant or Derrick Harmon.
Aaron Donald 6'1", 285 lbs arms 32 5/8".
Of course Donald had one of the best get offs at the snap ever and was just slippery.
