And your point is? He still took less to stay with a contender (at the time). Call it a "home town discount" or loyalty or whatever. He had more money waiting on him in Seattle and he signed in SD.

My point is most free agents dont see the end of those big contracts(cut, renegotiated, extended using current $) they sign so it is often more important that there is larger upfront money. Instead of deals that are loaded in the final year(s) that they will never see.

Because Seattle was offering more overall. But with a backloaded contract hed probaly never see that money in the last year or two.
