PREFACE: This turned into a much bigger research project than I intended when I first started writing it. I just wanted to acknowledge KA's career-best 16 receptions today and point out how his career got a major boost the day Herbie stepped onto the field for the first time. I think I covered all the Chargers' best pass catchers in franchise history in writing this piece. One interesting thing I gleaned is that Keenan Allen's next TD catch will move him into a tie with Wes Chandler for 4th most (41) by a WR in franchise history, and 6th overall, when you factor in TEs Winslow & Gates.
You gotta know KA loves him some Herbie. KA's stock went way up the day the Chargers drafted JH, he just didn't know it at the time. Herbie is a gift to KA that I am sure he was not expecting. (Conversely, KA is a gift to Herbie as well. Not many rookie QBs have a Keenan Allen to throw to.)
Today was Keenan Allen's 4th game this season with 100 or more yards receiving. He has games of 145 (NYJ), 132 (Car), 125 (Jax), 103 (LVR). He had 96 yards v KC, if you round up that gives KA five 100 yard games this season.
His 145 yards today gives him 835 through 10 games, which puts him between 4th and 10th most, depending on when the final numbers for this week's games are posted.
He's on pace for 1,336 yards receiving this season. His previous best was 1,396 yards in 2017, the season he won Comeback Player of the Year. There's no reason to think he can't top 1,400 yards receiving if the connection with Herbert continues to improve.
With his franchise record 16 receptions today, he already has 81 catches on the season, and I think that leads the league. It's an average of 10.9 per game, putting him on a pace for 130 for the season. His previous best was 104 last season.
His 5 TDs through 10 games puts him on pace for 8 for the season, which would tie his personal best of 8 in his 2013 rookie campaign. No reason he can't achieve a new personal best for TDs this season as well.
KA has played 7-1/2 seasons for the Chargers (total - including the year and a half he lost to injury in 2015-16) and has 605 receptions for 7,240 yards on his career. He is only 28, which is hard to believe because he has been playing for so long, but he was only 20 (by one day) the day he was drafted. He turned 21 on the 3rd day of the 2013 draft. He should be able to play at a high level well into his 30s; speed has never been his game, it's moves, moxie and hands, skillsets that don't fade quickly like pure speed does.
KA signed a 4-year extension this season and is locked up through 2024. That means that, hopefully, he is paired with Herbert the remainder of this season and the next four seasons.
Lance Alworth played 9 seasons (1962-70) for the Chargers and had 493 receptions for 9,584 yards and 85 TDs (before he moved on to Dallas for two seasons where he was a shadow of his former self.) KA has already exceeded LA's reception total and probably will exceed his yardage total. Catching up to Alworth in TD receptions is less likely. KA has 40 after today; he would have to play a long time to get to 85. Alworth was a TD making machine, and remember Alworth played when there only 14 games per season and in the 1960s pro football was not as pass-happy, unless you played for Sid Gilman. :lmao:Alworth's ypc for the Chargers was an astonishing 19.4. He was a long ball specialist. KA's career ypc is 12.0. They are two different types of WRs.
Charlie Joiner played 11 of his 19 pro seasons with the Chargers. He had 586 receptions for 9,203 yards for the Chargers and 47 TDs. His ypc was 15.7.
Gary Garrison, a WR whom the Chargers drafted in 1966 and played 11 seasons in San Diego, had 404 receptions for 7533 yards, 58 TDs and 18.6 ypc. He also played his entire career during the 14 game era.
KA has already surpassed the number of receptions/yardage/TD catches of Wes Chandler, Vincent Jackson, Anthony Miller, Malcom Floyd, John Jefferson and Tony Martin, except for Chandler's 41 TD receptions, which KA will match with his next TD.
Kellen Winslow, who redefined the tight end position in his 9 seasons with the Chargers from 1979-87, had 541 receptions for 6,741 yards and 45 TD catches.
Of course, the franchise's GOAT pass catcher is Gates. Sixteen seasons, 955 receptions, 11,841 yards. His 116 TD catches are the pro football record for a TE and 7th most all time.
Interesting to note: John Jefferson is No. 10 on the Chargers all-time TD reception list, despite playing fewer than 3 seasons for this franchise. He had 36 TD catches in 45 games. Oh what could have been. (Eugene Klein!!!!!)
Hunter Henry (19) and Tyrell Williams (17) are 17th & 18th.
Mike Williams is tied with LT for 23rd most with 15. Ekeler is 25th with 14.
