He is depth not a projected starter with starting experience.
Now, I can easily see Covington being better versus the run or at collapsing the pocket, which may be a greater need for our team, but not a better DL player overall.
Overall, though, the point I was making was that Covington is a back end of the roster reserve player and nothing to get too excited about.
He is not a bad signing, just nothing special.

That gives the Chargers 10 defensive linemen. Maybe six make the team? No more than seven:
Defensive line (10): DE Linval Joseph [D-2 2010 Giants], DT Jerry Tillery [D-1 2019], DE Justin Jones [D-3 2018]
Reserves: DE Joe Gaziano [UDFA 2020], NT/DE Cortez Broughton [D-7 2019], NT Breiden Fehoko [UDFA 2020], DT T.J. Smith [UDFA 2020], DT Jared Goldwire [UDFA 2021], NT Forrest Merrill [UDFA 2021], DE/DT Christian Covington [D-6 2015 Houston]

So just glad to see another player for the rotation .
