Being away from your family has little to do with the quality of being a father, disagree, then talk to some of the military fathers that surround you in San Diego that have to often be separated from their families. Finishing something to completion, showing a commitment to something you believe in are strong examples to send to children. Money is not everything and Rivers is a role model.

If he would leave due to health concerns or anything similar I would have a completely different opinion. If that was the case he should leave now and not when the Chargers go to LA.
Oh please. A guy choosing his kids over his legacy is something to be applauded, not criticized. His situation is nothing like a military family. I can tell you from experience that the child of a military family would far rather have their dad home than off serving some noble cause far away from home. And I'd argue that he is seeing something to completion - his contract. He gave a commitment to the team through the end of this season and is seeing it through. Money is only relevant in that he is free to do what he wants - including retiring in his early 30's, something virtually nobody else has the luxury to do.

He's played the business side of football before. Nothing wrong with that. A man has to look out for what's best for him and his family.

Retirement is the only card/leverage he has for the next 3 years.

Franchise QB's already have all the leverage they need. They're basically negotiating against themselves, because if they take too much of the pie, the team suffers.

Yep, but it didnt bother Brees. He lost his TE and didnt offer to restructure to keep him. Insted he said he was shocked. Really? He didnt think his 26.4 million cap hit would have anything to do with it?

Missing my point, I don't see it as choosing kids over football. For a child having a dad as an NFL QB must be pretty incredible. I don't see it as a negative. I would bet that PR is a pretty darn good father and playing football is only helping his family. It would be unprecedented for a franchise NFL QB who is an admitted football junkie to walk away in the "near" prime of his career. Carson Palmer being the only similar situation and he had a terrible relationship with the Bengals.

I do get your point. Just pointing out that the thought of moving his kids to LA could outweigh being an NFL QB. Hardwick did comment on the radio that he just doesn't see Rivers wanting to raise his kids in LA and that he sees him as being a high school football coach at some point. I guess we'll see how it shakes out.

I think there may be one or two communities in LA County that support the Rivers lifestyle. This, IMO, is business.
                Prediction:
                Correct: Chargers CI fails miserably.
Fail: Team stays in San Diego until their lease runs out in 2020. (without getting new deal done by then) .
Sig Bet WIN: The Chargers will file for relocation on January 15.

So let's address the elephant in the room, and something that's been occupying too much time in my noggin.

Obviously, just about everyone important from the Chargers flew up to Oregon last night to have dinner with Mariota and work him out today. I think it's significant that it's not just scouts and some coaches, it's the head coach, the QB coach, the offensive coordinator, and "members of the front office". So there's that. Then there's another huge issue I see with trading Rivers to Tennessee for the #2. WHAT IF TAMPA BAY SELECTS MARIOTA #1?!? We would be screwed. The way I see it, they would have to trade with Tampa Bay to ensure that they got Mariota, if that's what they're even wanting (but if they were just doing due diligence, why send everyone to Oregon?) - and, while everyone is talking about "Tennessee is close to Rivers' home state of Alabama", I'm over here thinking that Tampa Bay is pretty damned close to Alabama too.

The trade with Tennessee would be agreed to contingent upon Mariota being available at the #2 slot. The trade wouldn't go down until the Tampa has made their pick. That said, I think Rivers will be the Bolts QB for the next 3 years.

I am sure he thought about it when they restructured his contract earlier. Everybody needs to point the finger.............
I get you, he chose not to do it again so its his fault. Why not blame Management, since they are the ones that put the team in that situation, not Brees?

I am becoming genuinely worried that this is going to happen.

For whatever reason. Before I wasn't. I was of the opinion this was the "due diligence" crowd.

However, if Tampa does take Mariotta...the chargers are no worse off than they were before. They'll have Rivers for one more year.

The deal can NOT include a swap of 1st round picks, though. If they are getting Mariotta, they need to get Gordon/Gurley.
"...of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong."

Funny, as much as I like these rumors (makes for some interesting speculation during the dull times), I feel just the opposite, i.e., nothing is going to happen with Rivers and he will be our QB, as everyone says, for 3 more years (if we stay in San Diego...otherwise, I think he retires).

And I agree 100%: This can't be Rivers AND our #17 for the Titans' #2!! That would be a f**king joke, and we'd deserve all the ridicule we'd get for doing that. Even if Tampa were to throw in their #2 (in other words, Rivers and #17 for #2 and #34). Still not enough.
