Regardless, it's a huge number to pay a guy that would clearly not be happy. Not worth the bad publicity by itself, you could argue. Then what do you do in 2016? Just a bad situation to be in unless you are convinced you're going to win a Super Bowl in 2015-2016 and couldn't care less.
And when you consider the other option of Rivers just retiring after 2015 and us being left completely and utterly empty-handed....you can easily see how trading him now is not necessarily the end of the world.
Tell me, short of him just willingly staying in SD/LA and signing another extension, do the Chargers win in any of the other proposed scenarios? No, we come out sorely behind. I like this approach of trying to be proactive instead of just crossing our fingers that he'll stay or that the team will stay in SD. The world doesn't revolve around Philip Rivers and his 4-5 playoff record. And I don't want to be left holding our dicks if there is even a decent chance he is no longer on the team after 2015.ESPN Screename: GoBolts02

But what if the Chargers REALLY want either Gordon or Gurley and are worried both will be gone before we pick at #17? Why not help stir up the scramble for QBs ahead of us in hopes this helps the RBs fall further down and increase our chances to get 1 without having to trade up? I'm not sold on the idea TT is even considering trading Rivers this year, but I think it helps our cause if all the other teams THINK it is seriously being considered and we are targeting Mariotta.Life is too short to drink cheap beer

From what I gathered so far, at least TB, PHI, Buff and Cleve are looking to draft QBs this year and the most interest is in Winston & Mariotta with TB likely to take Winston #1 overall if predictions hold true. That would leave Mariotta for at least 3 teams that want him.

So we have a #2 and #17, then don't draft again until pick #83? Also, we have no 4th-round pick. Two 1st-round picks and a 3rd-round pick. And no Rivers. BAD trade.
