Still think Mager is the nickle DB/LB, not a S. He is going to be Gilchrist's replacement, not Weddle.

Mager is gonna fun to watch in camp.
Where he ends up will be really intersting bc Steve and Fleet disagree on his position, and I can't think of anyone in the media who's opinions weigh more to me than those two guys. I can't wait for camp.

Lack of pass rush wasn't a problem when all our DBs were healthy. There's a symbiotic relationship there and oftentimes that extra half second the DB gives the DL is enough for him to finish the deal. And the DL removing that extra half second helps out the DBs as well.
        Prediction:
        Correct: Chargers CI fails miserably.
Fail: Team stays in San Diego until their lease runs out in 2020. (without getting new deal done by then) .
Sig Bet WIN: The Chargers will file for relocation on January 15.

            Our symbiotic relationships suck.

Having good DB can help the pass rush some. If you have some pass rushers who aren't quite as quick/fast as an elite player, good coverage can give them that additional split second to get to the QB by forcing him to hold the ball and go through his progression. And it really helps to sustain a pass rush, because you aren't going to have everyone getting a great jump off the ball on every play.

Coverage alone won't force turnovers and cause offenses to make mistakes that pass rush can cause. If the QB is just sitting back and can't find anyone, he will throw the ball away after a 3-4 seconds, and regroup for the next play. Sooner or later, you have to rush the passer to be any good.

Our pass rush has to improve. The secondary has played a lot better and is doing their job, but we need to get after the QB better, and force some turnovers. The big difference between the Chargers and a lot of the best teams is that we don't get turnovers and we have to outplay the other team all game long. If you can get some turnovers and deny the other team points, give our offense some field position, then we will have a much bigger margin for error.

The D got hit with a lot of injuries last season, not as much as the Oline but we seemed to be down a starter or two (or three) every game.

Say the same happens this season, we lose DL, CB, LB players, get inconsistent play from all squads, a MLB totally sucks (Butler...), you know the drill. The D should still do what it did last season, keep us in most games, which us what it's supposed to do. All that negative, yet still getting its job done. If the OL sustains even half the injuries, will we end up in the playoffs? Considering we were a game away last year, seems reasonable to expect this outcome with a smidgen of better luck on the health front. Plus all the guys getting better (supposedly, its what a lot of players do as Steve reminds us), and new additions via FA and the draft (Gordon for one).

Not seeing how we could do worse than last year barring crippling injuries like like we haven't seen yet. Odds of that seem far less than winning 10-12 games (or more if one wants to be a homer). Bring it.

you know it's a slow offseason when guys who have yet to show anything like Mager and Steve Williams make this one of the best secondaries in the league. We're just missing the yearly Weddle interview quote of how this year is different, he'll take on ore of a leadership role, etc etc etc....
