Just an exhibition game, but Chargers blockers whiffed too often Saturday.
Missed blocks imperiled Philip Rivers, whom the Seahawks knocked down four times in the second quarter. The Chargers also gave up penetration on several run plays, a bugaboo in the other two exhibitions too.
Some of the leakage owed to Seattle's quickness. Other times it was a slow or less-than-stout response, either by linemen or running backs. Rivers can cover up for his blockers, but when the games begin to count, Sept. 13, the blockers will need to be on point more often.
Why you should be excited
Melvin Ingram whipped Seahawks blockers as part of the starting defense's fine showing. Ingram outquicked Seattle's tackles and also created problems inside. Ingram is having the best summer of his NFL career, and looks like he'll cause the Lions trouble in the opener.
Ingram was the fulcrum for John Pagano's energetic defense. Jahlee Addae and Ricardo Mathews also contributed to a first-quarter shutout, in which Seattle's first unit gained only 32 yards.
Why was Nick Novak jumping around?
Novak made a 52-yard field goal and looked very happy about it. The veteran is trying to hold off strong-legged rookie Josh Lambo. Three-pointers are Novak's specialty, kickoffs his Achilles, and when he followed with a kickoff five yards into the end zone, the Seahawks took it to their 49.
Why were the Seahawks mobbing their kicker?
Because Steven Hauschka's 60-yarder, aimed at El Cajon, gave them a 16-15 lead with 16 seconds left. So it ended.
The ball cleared the crossbar by a shoelace.
How did what's his name do?
Several players trying to win a job helped themselves. Chris Hairston, who seems to have the inside track at swing tackle, played left guard with the starters for a half.
Undrafted edge rusher Ryan Mueller waxed a Seahawks left tackle to force an incompletion, and rookie corner Craig Mager (who already seemed a roster lock) broke up a deep pass against speedster Tyler Lockett.
Who had a difficult night?
Receiver Austin Pettis, flagged for offensive interference, cost the team a third-down completion and pulled the Chargers out of scoring position.
How did Melvin Gordon look?
The rookie had an uneven night in his first exhibition since the opener against Dallas. He looked fast and fit, but at times was indecisive. On thee of his early carries, he had no yards after contact. As Gordon stayed on the field, however, he got extra yards. With the bulk of the preseason behind him, he appears healthy going toward the opener.
For now, Branden Oliver looks like the team's best rusher, but Gordon should only improve in weeks ahead. Whoever gets the handoffs could stand to get more help from the line. The Chargers' best run play appears to be the draw. On run-first plays, their blocking has come up short this summer.
Onward.

Still very worried about the offense. Nice to see Johnson out there making plays, but the team doesn't look like one that is going to score TD's rather than FGs when it gets to the red zone. Also, I like how our bar is set so low that a dude like Keenan Allen looks like a stud for catching a couple inside slants.
Otherwise, Melvin Gordon is pretty much a bust so far. Oliver... has definitely improved. He's much stronger than last year. +1 man. Oliver is no longer "just a guy" in my eyes.
I'm surprised other teams haven't figured out what the Charger defense has. Rush a dude who is just as fast as Wilson and then he sucks because you've taken away his "center of gravity" (running around alot).
"T-Rex" Mager is a stud in making. He's definitely won the 3rd CB job in my eyes.Prediction:
Correct: Chargers CI fails miserably.
Fail: Team stays in San Diego until their lease runs out in 2020. (without getting new deal done by then) .
Sig Bet WIN: The Chargers will file for relocation on January 15.
