The Bengals are a well rounded team, explosive offensive talent, a QB that is never out of a game, don't make boneheaded penalties, a money kicker, and they have momentum right now, extending back to the last several games of the regular season. The Chargers have some of those qualities. We have Herbo and everybody else doesn't. Build up the D and add a couple of pieces on O. Bolt Up!

I don't mind going for it on 4th down once in a while, under the following conditions:

1. We need to be at LEAST inside the opposing team's territory, preferably past the 35 yd. line or so.
2. Dial up a creative play, something the other team hasn't seen...ANYTHING but Ekkie up the gut vs. a stacked box for nada.
3. If it's a close game, and we are in FG range, better kick the figgie.
4. If we're behind by a lot, and #1 and #2 are followed, then yes, go for it a bit more often.

I endorse this. But expanding on it, the difference between the Chargers and Bengals really comes down to coaching. The Bengals are well-coached. The Chargers were not well-coached this season, and the questionable/irrational decisions to go for it instead of taking three points are why Burrow is going to the SB in his 2nd season and Herbert sat at home for the playoffs.

That said, let this be a lesson in the wisdom of sticking with a HC who struggles early in his tenure. The Bengals were the worst team in the NFL in Zac Taylor's first season. Two seasons later, he has his team in the the Super Bowl. I just hope Brandon Staley can evolve as a coach, and get Herbert and the Chargers to Lombardi Land in the near future.

Defense.

To build on this, the Bengals actually spent big in FA on defense in 2020 and 2021. It finally paid off this offseason. But generally speaking you don’t often get the return that the Bengals did by spending so much in FA. Some luck involved as well.

With that being said, I don’t think it’ll take us two offseason to build up this defense. We just need to make the rights choices. Or mostly right lol.
