Just telling y’all don’t get your hopes up David Montgomery just signed a 3 yr deal with Detroit. There’s a very good chance Chicago drafts Bijan Robinson at 10. If they don’t get him it will be Nolan Smith.
very good chance we draft Jabry Gibbs with our pick.
Explaining the Post June 1 Designation | Over the Cap
So there's no benefit to doing it now unless he has a bonus payment of some sort that comes due before then.
they have until this friday to cut him, if they don’t, like half of his salary will become guaranteed…this is why it doesn’t make sense to cut him post june 1st, it’ll just mean that they’ll have to give him money now for no other reason than to save on cap space later…they should be cutting him soon, I’d be shocked if they kept him on, it’s not like we haven’t seen enough from dicker…they could always bring in an UDRFA as a camp leg later…
And also, if the chargers already know they’re going with dicker, they should let hopkins go so he can secure a deal in free agency…

Interesting. From OTC:
Hopkins $1.1 million injury guarantee in 2023 will vest to a full guarantee on the 3rd day 2023 league year.
So, as you say, $1.1 million of his 2023 salary of $2,230,000 becomes guaranteed sometime on Friday.
But if they release him before that, with a post-June 1 designation, they save $2,285,147 against the cap, with an $800K dead-money charge, according to OTC.

they probably should do that if they don’t need the money now, they could always spend that part of their “in season budget” now and then reimburse the sums after june 1st?

I agree that the Chargers should do this. They wouldn't realize the cap savings until June 1, but as you say, it would then be added to their in-season free cap space. Well, we'll know by Friday!

I’m kind of fuzzy on the rules here, would hopkins be able to find a free agent deal after he gets cut tomorrow if he’s a post june 1st cut? Or does he have to wait until june?

Not a bad consolation prize...now that we've signed Pip, OT is less of a priority...

Based on that description from OTC, he would be actually released now (and therefore free to enter into another contract with whoever he wanted) but the cap savings for the Chargers aren't applied until June 1 (or maybe June 2?). Until then, they have to keep his current contract on their cap. Kind of weird.

If Eke is gone, maybe. Gibbs still isnt the bellcow we have lacked for years though. I’m leaning back towards guessing they may look to Speed WR or TE at 21 but who knows.
